CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT EMERGES AS CLEAR WINNER OF THE BEST AIRPORT IN AFRICA AWARD AT THE 2010 SKYTRAX WORLD AIRPORT AWARDS

Cape Town International Airport has been named as the winner of the Best Airport in Africa award at the Skytrax 2010 World Airport Awards. This is a repeat success for Cape Town Int'l Airport who also secured the title in 2009.

Edward Plaisted of Skytrax said "Apart from providing a comfortable and pleasant airport environment that passengers clearly enjoy here in Cape Town, we found that many customers specifically highlighted this as being a friendly airport. That in itself is not an easy task for any airport to achieve, and we congratulate Cape Town International Airport for maintaining such high standards of service, and striving to keep the customer happy."

The Best Airport Africa award was presented to Ms Deirdre Hendricks of Cape Town International Airport at the Skytrax World Airport Awards ceremony held in Brussels, Belgium on 23rd March 2010.

Sunday 7 November 2010 marked one year since Airports Company South Africa, Cape Town International Airport (ACSA CTIA) opened its doors to the new central terminal building.

Since then, the airport has processed just over 7,306,701 passengers and seen 43 222 aircraft departures. The central terminal building’s (CTB’s) consolidated Domestic and International check-in area was a first for CTIA. Another first was the consolidated security screening point allowing the airport to derive more efficiencies. Through the airport’s expansion programme other firsts included the elevated roadway, transport plaza, parkade with 4000 parking bays (double the size of the first one) and 8 new air bridges for use by Domestic passengers. With the new terminal also came a new automated baggage system which has already processed 2,972, 902 pieces of luggage!

The month of November is not only special because it marks the milestone of the CTB, but it also signifies the beginning of the airports peak season. Some of the seasonal airlines have resumed their summer schedules; these include Lufthansa Airline (flying daily to Frankfurt), Virgin Airline (flying daily to London), Air Berlin (flying twice weekly to Düsseldorf) and British Airways which has put in place a daily additional flight to London.

“The opening of the CTB last year was a proud moment for all airport employees, but it was also a proud moment for Cape Town. It brought with it much needed additional capacity. It offers ample space, wonderful retail facilities and it’s functional. Many Capetonians heaved a sigh of relief when they moved through it for the first time”, says Deidre Hendricks, Communications Manager, Cape Town International Airport.

“This time of year is also particularly busy as we start to see more International visitors pass through the airport”, continued Hendricks. While the airport often facilitates large numbers of people, the highlight has undoubtedly been the Soccer World Cup, with approximately 23 000 passengers being processed per day. During this period, the airport’s busiest day was 7 July, where just under 27 000 passengers were processed!

Cape Town International Airport was voted Best Airport in Africa and Best Airport for Staff Service Excellence in the Skytrax Awards. CTIA received top honours for the SA Roofing magazine Steel awards and was nominated as a finalist in the South African Council of Shopping centres, retail, design and development awards. These accolades belong to the people, who everyday work hard to create a positive airport experience.

While celebrating 80 years of service to Cape Town, British Airways have announced that Cape Town was the fourth most popular longhaul Christmas and New Year destination after New York, Miami and Dubai.

Cape Town seems to have been very popular this season, had 17% increase in international traffic for December, obviously then brought on by BA success as well, but more with Emirates second daily flight, Air France and Edelweiss joining and increases by other airlines like Turkish and Singapore.

I was in Kaapstad in 2008. In 2010 I returned for the WC2010. I was totally surprised by the new airport. Very clean and modern. I also like the Durban airport.
