There are a lot of parking lots in those pics that need to be developed!

Those parking lots would have been filled if we didn't hit a hard recession in the early 80's.

I've always wondered why Edmonton seems to be significantly less developed than Calgary. They are both similar in population, are they not?

Edmonton is jsut as developed. However, the developers who had dreamt of building along Jasper Ave suddenly stopped - they dropped their projects after demolishing the feeble little warehouses there and made parking lots. If you go south of Jasper into Bellamy Hill or west to Grandin and Oliver, you'll see that it is very densely developed. The Government District is nearly void of parking lots.

Lougheed also started trying to diversify Alberta a bit in the 70's, so that while they were demolishing the warehouses, company and government offices were heading south to build up Calgary.

So the Central Business District was left half-empty, the Heritage District was left with nothing, Railtown (where Stationlands is being developed) was left an empty wasteland, North Edge was left quiet and East Jasper, once the place where all the hotels were, was left to urban decay.

Due to the new influx, we're seeing the Heritage District finally densify and North Edge is coming along very well. The western half of Railtown now has something - I guess that's a good thing. It's not stellar (stripmalls and walkups) but it's something.

The CN Rail yard used to be where Stationlands is getting built. Alot of land became parking lots when the rail yard closed in the early 90's.

The trackhoe count is now to 3. On the number 9 to school, seeing the arm of the trackhoe poking over the old passenger building was amusing - looked like a big beast was behind it or something.

More pics by newfangled.

More soil removal.

One day, this building will get torn down. One day.

Better look at the soil removal and a neat look at how neatly and precisely it is done.

The soil is being hauled away for it to be treated.

Some dust being kicked up.

Just scraping off the tainted dirt.

Imagine a tower there.

Another look.

One last photo for the day.

Nice pics!
Seems like every other building in that part of town is abandoned.
Are they planning on using them or are they just for decoration???

The big building in front of Stationlands is the old baggage-handling building. It now sits abandoned, been sitting so since the railway was pulled out. Hopefully CN does something with it, preferably plow it over or something.

The grey building behind it is a homeless shelter and the red building (old majestic Immigration Hall) beside that grey building is being converted into another homeless shelter. *sigh*

Haven't updated in a while. Time to switch this baby to U/C, as the digging has started.

Photos by newfangled from SSP & C2E.
