Amazing for one of the world's most crowded and poorest nations.

How big the city is?
Do they make those fantastic sweets like rasgulla and rasmalai
like in West Bengal?

Dhaka Clarifications

Ahem,

Let me clear up a few things.

First, the soil in Dhaka is too soft (alluvial soil) to have lateral strength. The bedrock is deep down below (at least 300 metres or so) because this is on the Ganges Delta. Ergo -- you cannot have structures higher than 22 stories made economically.

Same story like in New Orleans. The whole town of Dhaka is not more than 5-10 meters above sea level -- although it is a couple hundred miles from the coast. Flooding is a major problem. Consider these facts when you think about Dhaka.

Second -- The pictures TMAC has shown are from a few years ago when pollution was really bad. They were caused mainly by Tuk-tuks or two stroke three wheeler taxis -- the majority of which has been now banned.

I suggest overseas travelers to visit. Poor they may be -- but I've met some of the most generous open-hearted people in that city. The problem of Dhaka is not poverty -- it is an image problem. I've visited Taichung and Pusan and parts of those cities looked far uglier and dirtier. Everything gets better with time though.

I agree -- the Skyline does suck. They should have built better looking structures and planned the arteries better. However Bangkok or Singapore's skyline did not look any better twenty years ago and I have seen those at that time. Give this city another ten years and you'll see where it goes.

Unlike some other Asian cities -- the money that built these skyscrapers did not come from Overseas Chinese investments, Tax-evading Japanese businesses or prostitutional tourism.

Food for thought....

With those last pics I think Spokane just got its ass kicked. Some of those are very nice buildings, and if you consider the economic resourses of this nation, Dhaka's buildings and skyline are quite an acommplishment. For that I give it a 7/10

Surprising, but not that great on a world scale. I give it a 6.5/10.
