#PROJECT: AL BATEEN WATERFRONT
TDIC to redevelop Abu Dhabi's Al Bateen waterfront
The Al Bateen district of Abu Dhabi, the oldest occupied area of the UAE capital city, is to be redeveloped at a cost of Dhs1.6bn to include a signature waterfront destination with a luxury five-star hotel complex. ![]() The 54,000 square metre site will be known as the Al Bateen Wharf and will include a San Francisco-style Fishermen's Marina and the Al Bateen Wharf Hotel. The 400-room hotel will also have a serviced residential wing with 200 apartments. It will be developed by the UAE's multi-disciplined Belbadi Enterprises in partnership with Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), the project's master developer and the company which manages and develops the tourism assets of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA). 'This project signals the rejuvenation of Al Bateen with the development characterized by sensitivity to the long-standing fishing and boat-building traditions of the area,' said His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, ADTA and TDIC Chairman. 'We have also taken into account public access to the new wharf maintaining the heritage of Al Bateen as a prime waterfront destination for all.' Master planned by Singapore's award-winning Surbana Corporation Pte Ltd, and renowned for its holistic approach to urbanscapes, the Fishermen's Marina will include berths for 285 fishing boats and 38 racing dhows and will retain the Bateen shipyard which has remained unchanged for years and showcases the ancient skills of Arabian dhow building. The dry-stack facility will have a maximum capacity for 200 boats. Hydraulic lifts are provided for each of the racing dhow berths in order to lift the boats out of the water after each race. The marina will have a maintenance shed, which will incorporate modern facilities for use by the existing fishermen, and there will be a community centre with its own Majlis and retail outlets for fishing equipment. In addition, water and electricity connections will be provided to ensure high standards of service. Convenient fuelling facilities are also being made available for all the boats in the marina. There will also be an active public boardwalk complete with a range of waterfront shopping, restaurants and cafés. The boardwalk will be dotted with environmentally-sensitive lighting. The USA's Otak architectural practice has been appointed lead architect for the twin-tower Al Bateen Wharf Hotel. Otak's designs for the Al Bateen Wharf recently earned a People's Choice Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Oregon. 'This will be a luxurious property that takes advantage of the marina setting and will reflect the strong sea-faring heritage of Al Bateen,' said Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Badi, Chairman, Belbadi Enterprises. 'The hotel is being designed with a nautical theme offering spectacular Arabian Gulf views.' The Al Bateen Wharf Hotel will incorporate the latest in sustainable design features with energy-efficient solar screening, eco-friendly landscaping, passive cooling through shading and airflow, fritted glass with integrated solar cells and a transparent 'sail like' veil which will transform the shape of the building at night. It will comprise banqueting facilities, a health club and spa as well as state-of-the-art business and conference centres. It will have shops at its street level, underground parking, a rooftop late dining restaurant, rooftop plaza and an eco-roof garden. The 15-storey, hotel tower will include deluxe executive town homes with private entry and private swimming pool access. The 14-storey apartment tower will also feature deluxe poolside town homes. 'It is our obligation now to excel and perform, delivering elegant renascence to a precious inheritance of Abu Dhabi's Culture and Tradition' said George Papagrigorakis, Executive Director Belbadi. 'Our goal: the on time and unparallel quality embrace of fishermen tradition with modern - environmentally sustainable - comfortable living.' Work on the redevelopment is due to begin before the end of this year with completion scheduled for end of 2009. |

That is where Al Bateen Marina is. They want to refurbish the place.Everyone knows that this area will transform into something modern, but we did not know of any specific project. The plan sounds good but too promising (I mean.. "'Our goal: the on time" & " completion scheduled for end of 2009")

AST receives Dh142m Al Bateen contract
on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 Abu Dhabi Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has awarded the Dh142 million contract of the marina of Al Bateen Wharf Hotel project to AST, a contracting company. The contract covers dredging and construction of a two-km quay wall and pontoons for the Fishermen's Marina at the Al Bateen Wharf urban redevelopment project. The marine work has already commenced and is expected to take a year to complete. TDIC is redeveloping 54,000 sqm at Al Bateen, under a public-private-partnership with the UAE's Belbadi Enterprises, into a signature waterfront destination with a luxury five-star Al Bateen Wharf Hotel complex. The project, due for completion in 2011, is estimated to cost about Dh1.6bn. Featuring berths for 320 fishing vessels and 38 racing dhows, the marina is central to the revitalisation of Abu Dhabi's Al Bateen district. CEO Lee Tabler said the area will be developed as per the best sustainable practices. http://business24-7.ae/Articles/2009...e02e73f2f.aspx |

Ok here are some pics, excuse the quality - low light mixed with a camera phone do not good pictures make.
The first was taken about 6 weeks ago when they were just starting on the barrage. The rest other two are from today. ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This landmark $240 million facility leverages its waterfront location to promote tourism, business and public recreation. As lead design-build consultant for the 103,000-square-meter Hotel and Spa, Otak has managed all architecture, engineering, landscape architecture and design coordination. Sustainability has been a key component of the entire project, from its 400-room hotel and 220 serviced apartments to its 1,000-person ballroom and automated subgrade garage for 2,000 cars. Among the sustainable elements are energy-efficient solar screens, fritted glass with integrated solar cells and an eco-roof. Before ground was even broken on the two towers, retail shops, conference facility, waterfront market and promenade, the innovative design for the Al Bateen Wharf Hotel had earned the 2007 People’s Choice Award from the American Institute of Architects, Portland, Oregon Chapter.
