The new "Public" multi-store opened for business on 1 Karageorgi Servias street in Syntagma Square. For a number of years the building was used as a vocational training school.

The 5-storey building was acquired by the Germanos Group of companies at a price of €30mn during a rather adventurous process because of the many owners and the ownership status of the building. It took another €7mn and one year in order for it to be fully restored to its current state. The contractor was ACron constructions currently also involved in the reconstruction of the historic 10-storey "Minion" in Patission street which will be the new mega retail hot spot probably by the end of 2008.

Completed: 1911 (!)
Fully renovated: 2006-2007

The third building which is almost invisible from the Athinon Avenue which as indicated by the sign, belongs to the German Alliantz Insurance company.




The complex was completed in 2007 and belongs to a rapidly developing area close to the new Panathinaikos Stadium and the new 80,000sq metre shopping centre built next to the stadium, built by the Babis Vovos group.

The Onassis Home of Letters and Fine Arts looks really beautiful and the new Panathinaikos FC stadium will be in my personal top5 worldwide when it's finished.

The Academia Platonos looks also good.

But it would be nice to see some new highrises in some parts of Athens.
It must have one of the strictest height limits worldwide. I hope it will change in the near future. I don't want to see Athens full of scrapers, but some good-looking highrises in suitable areas would be a nice addition for this great city.

You are right lpioe, Athens needs modern and eco-frendly highrises, the positive thing is that something in the horizon seems to change, i don't know we will see in the near future.

This building in Syntagma Square has been beautifully restored. Though I can't put my finger on the style, perhaps late-neoclassic or even beaux-arts. A very stately and handsome building brought back to its original glory.



Unfortunately the 'modernist' building next to it is not so appealing and could at least do with an interesting paint job. Although it's much better than it was in the past when unrestrained advertising was permitted on Athenian buildings.

I also think the new stock exchange buildings are quite stately and handsome in a modern sense, even though many may consider them 'boxy' and not tall enough.

This proposal for a Modern Art Gallery is sensational. Very iconoclastic while speaking of Greece's current and historical maritime tradition. Hope this comes to fruition.



Overall some very interesting developments and proposals!!
