MELBOURNE | MECC (International Convention Centre) Expansion | U/C

MECC - Where Australia meets the World

$1 billion-plus expansion to add second convention building to the largest complex of it's kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Currently the complex consists of two massive buildings straddling two banks of the Yarra River, the northside holding the current Convention Centre (completed 1990) and World Trade Centre, and south with the Exhibition Centre (1996). The new addition to the complex will be built from the western end of the Exhibition portion (which is one of the longest roofs in the World).

It will consist of a 5000 convention auditorium, a Hilton Hotel, shopping precinct, waterfront urban renewal and a cable stayed footbridge linking it to the rest of the complex on the other side of the river.

Construction is underway on what will be Australia's newest icon and the country's largest combined exhibition and convention centre.

The new Melbourne convention centre is part of an A$1 billion development including a Hilton hotel, a lifestyle retail precinct and 60,000 m2 of shopping.

The centre is designed to achieve the first six green star environmental rating, making it one of the greenest convention centres in the world.

Opening for business in 2009, it will revitalise the last crucial section of the Yarra River's edge, linking Southbank to Docklands.

As well as being visually striking with an 18 metre glass fašade facing the Yarra River, it will have a 5,000 seat plenary hall, which is unparalled in its flexibility.

Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre chief executive Leigh Harry says the convention centre will be an important architectural landmark for Melbourne, and will emulate what the city stands for.

"It will leave those who enter the space feeling like they have experienced Melbourne, from its maritime history, to its art and culture and sporting ethos."

Due for completion in 2009.

MECC

Finally, a thread on this construction site. Been searching through ssc for a long time, and finally its here! Thanks Alphaville for setting it up. The Convention Centre is really taking shape now and looking on schedule for completion by 2009.
Only thing is, due to construction, they have blocked of the bike trail that goes along the crown hotel side of the river, which means I have to ride into the city through an annoying detour.
But still, can't wait till its completed. The Centre along with the Hilton hotel will further enhance Melbourne's skyline and the Yarra River as a popular precint for locals and tourists alike.
BTW for those living in Melbourne, do you any of you know of the massive construction project that is situated opposite Melbourne Aquarium. And if so, is there a thread for that project? Thanks in advance

That would be Northbank Place, which will straddle the elevated railway between Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations.

Northbank Place

Check out OzScrapers Victorian development threads for more info!

Northbank Place should be a nice addition to the streetscape of Flinders.

Great! Light and shiny. Love the wood on the interior.
