Yes, looks three times taller than its 197 m. neighbor. But current height is around 480 m. Maybe to the top of core formwork are 490 m. The picture is stretched upwards. This is more realistic:

If you are referring to the lack of coverage in the western media that is understandable. Basically they ignore developments outside of Shanghai , Beijing and Hong Kong. The average Joe doesn't know any better . Maybe the BBC will send a TV crew to film outside after it is topped out saying something like it has been there for years completely abandoned a colossal waste of money Evidence that the so called construction boom in China is a mere myth. At least then it would get some media attention otherwise argue until you are blue in the face that it actually exists.

I'll bite, You are 100% right, I would have no knowledge of this tower, as an American, unless I was a member here,,, I show these bldgs. in progress to co-workers, and they can't believe the magnitude.. They think (the freedom tower, is the tallest on Earth). I'm so glad I can show the co-workers that it's,,, 1WTC, and (height wise) not even in the top 10 in the world. A few of my fire-fighting bud's are now members LOVE SSC

How can they think that? I mean, I assume most people at least know of the Burj Dubai. I can understand most people don't know anything about Chinese skyscrapers, but the Burj had a lot of media attention.

Hell, Freedom tower is officially not even the highest in NY anymore if you count by roof height

On the other hand, average asians themselves also don't know anything about American and European buildings/cities except a few landmarks.

i was taking pictures of Shimao in Shanghai and Chinese friends were really confused and told me it is just a normal building, when I told them it was as tall as the Eiffel Tower, they were quite surprised.

Chinese themselves, do not know the magnitude of their buidings

Also my boss went on a business trip to Tianjin a week ago and since he knows I am a skyscraper fan he told me he was in the tallest buiding and also told me about 'the other monster'rising next to it, little does he know that only a bit north west in the right direction there stands a building nearly twice the size soon.

People like to look up and think wow that's cool and tall and continue with their lifes. Being dedicated enough to actually compare sizes, make statistics and research information is only us crazy people

But then again, I found most of the people still being quite interested in my hobby when confronted with the facts in a small talk kind of manner.

Freedom Tower isn't even freedom tower, it's 1WTC, Like Killer Zavatar said, unless you're dedicated, to this forum, you don't understand it..
And if I remember correctly I saw Burj in 2010 with fireworks shooting from it, that's what made me come to this forum,,, I had no idea there was larger out of the USA?
and 99.99% of ppl don't know. I had no Idea that Taipei 101 was the tallest prior. So 99.99% of people don't care, the other .09% don't know the stats..
SSC Forum members are the .01% We know. And we are such a small % of the population.. My math, probably be wrong,
but, on a lighter note,, Merry Christmas all Forumer's and Happy New Year!

I love how the chinese stick to traditional materials in modern construction. Note the bamboo scaffolding.

^yep, no brainer there. Cheap, renewable (some species are the fastest growing land plants, at 6ft a day), flexible, and stronger than steel. Bamboo is a material of the future.
