Doubt will remain that alone forever...

Jin Mao also looked "stupid" back in the day.

also Jin Mao was the first building in a zone that was destined for skyscrapers, after all the oriental pearl was there as well already. GF is far away from the city cluster that does already feature a finished supertall.

Tianjin has 15.2 million people and a higher per capita GDP than Shanghai. Also Goldin Finance is 10km from the main city center within an emerging CBD. It's not in the middle of nowhere and not in some poverty-stricken backwater.

Who cares if it's not in the immediate CBD! It's a very cool building in its own right. I think the local government sees this part of the city like the City of London once saw Canary Wharf.

This building is by a private company as far as I understand, so they chose the location for their own reasons. Probably they wanted to stay a bit further from the city, so that they can build a bit of surroundings from the tower as well and so that the tower stands alone and looks even taller. There is hardly a comparable building, because of this reason, so I do like their decision, makes for a unique situation

Yeah, about 3km more than from Central Park South to 1WTC, about 3 km less than from Shenzhen Futian CBD to Shenzhen Houhai CBD and half the distance between downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina

A city the size of Tianjin has to be polycentric - otherwise you would have a traffic nightmare even with 10lane highways to the city center. Even Beijing realzed this now.

Or 5 km less than Downtown LA to Century City.

Though Dubai Marina is not really a CBD, more like a "supertall suburb"

One would have to live in a big city to realize this , Tianjin has the population of LA in an area the fraction of the size. The authorities in the Jing-JIn-Ji area are actually dispersing non core functions away from the city centre.

The population in and around the area is around one hundred million, if Tianjin is the wrong place what about Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing, Cheng Du, Guangzhou etc.

The reality is some people expect to crowd close to one billion people and the accompanying infrastructure into just two urban centers on the Mainland only because they are the only ones they know.

I recently met a visitor from Panama who was most impressed with Guangzhou the sheer scale of the city etc. Though he had trouble remembering the name of the city due to the fact it is rarely if ever mentioned in the media. In effect the preception is there is little of substance outside of Beijing and Shanghai., errecting tall monstrous buildings in places that aren't supposed to exist challenges that notion hence the hostility from some quarters.

It looks kind of silly. Might as well have built it in the Sahara Desert.
