Hmmm... so the cranes are idle in each photo of the top, over many days. Also, the cladding doesn't seem to have advanced at all.

The steel construction has risen it's not speedy but it's not at a total standstill if you look closely you can see towards the top of the building there is more floors added to the core and the columns have risen too

definitely on hold

I was there in early May and not a single construction worker on site. Not only this tower but the entire district. Quite a sight and definitely on hold, at least by then...

ťhis pic reminds me construction of Shanghai tower, but the rectangle shape and cladding on the bottom feels more like Shenzen´Ping´an

It's almost the same size as the PingAn but it seems much taller.

it is much slimmer than Ping an and is surrounded by lowrise industrial wasteland and not several 200m+ structures

From memory the surrounding area wasnt industrial wasteland when I visited. It just wasn't developed to the same extent as most of the city

Quite sad. I wonder how long it will just sit there with no work being done on it. Ryugyong Hotel comes to mind...

Yea it's not a bad looking building but being on hold at this stage sucks. The company is looking for funding to complete it. What'd be really sad is if chow tai fook binhai tops out before this.

The problem is that the building is in the middle of nowhere. I visited it and wondered about such a strange location.

And this problem has much more Chinese supertalls. I simply don´t understand why Shanghai was able to build excellent skyline with all it´s supertalls (400+) and many other cities can´t build all supertalls at one or 2 places, so it can make beautiful skyline.

^land and environment laws plus tax breaks mean it's more profitable and lawful to build on 'rural' areas (read: the city outskirts). Thus out-of-town developments, and to justify themselves, they are on a large scale, such as an entirely new city centre. This is the only way a city is allowed to grow -the 'rural' area soon becomes classed as an urban area, with the accordant prices. The next development then moves on to the next 'rural' patch conjoined.

The result is many major cities have a traditional centre, a 1980s-90s highrise centre alongside, then brand new cities outside.
