This weekend someone affiliated with the project opened up a big thread on BohaiBBS, and included pictures.

China 117 Right Now:

Residential Area Next to 117:

Polo Grounds, (Scheduled for completion this year):

50 Floor Twin Towers (Scheduled to start construction at the end of this year/beginning of next year).

So it seems that 117 is indeed progressing on the main tower.

Damn, i was hoping for a new design before they did that.I really think that they should have a more iconic tower, given its height and its 'landmark' status for this site

Hey, at least it is under construction. It is simple, but not bad, just boring.

I am following this project for a while now, but there allways was many qestions about it, that was never answered like: where is it located, wich part of the project we are looking on each photo update at, and how big really this whole thing is. I made some research, and now would like to clear some things up:

First. This thing is vast . For the last two years from time to time we were provided with some "front gate pictures" like this:

But i guess most of you (well at least I) was quite confused where to look at right? Where the hell is the bloody tower you would ask? And that is one thing , another is that what we can se after that gate is just small part of the development. Let me give you a picture (first plot you can see at the above "gate picture"):

That I thing really shows how big it is, and if believe google earth, and that pictures have really been taken june 28 2009, they still have a lot to do.

Finally, as for the location, the coordinates are 39 05' north, and 116 04' east, and here is the goole maps link:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...77162&t=h&z=14

And ones again let me give you a picture:

As you can see the development isn't only out of the center of Tianjin, but out of the whole city actually

For the end, i would like to inform moderators, that this tower is no longer called China 117 tower. According to the official developers site (http://www.goldinppt.com) its now called Goldin Finance 117. So please change the threads title.

And also from the official site, really nice wideo about the project:

It isn't really a "pudong" at all. It is more just a massive, bizarre development. While the area does have a hi-tech industrial park nearby, it is most immediately bordered by a bunch of (not very prestigious) universities, as well as a gigantic rainforrest-themed restaurant where they have seals swimming through an artificial river in the middle of it, (you can order the seals, from what I'm told). Even the development itself, if you look at the overview posted below, is pretty spread out, and not a dense urban area like you would expect in Pudong along the river.

This is a tower in Dongguan. The 'diamond' thing doesn't look bad at all. Thought it could be interesting to imagine the outcome of this tower.

From http://www.arup.com/Projects/Goldin_..._Tianjin.aspx#!

Goldin Finance 117

Located in the new Central Business District of Tianjin, this 117-storey tower will become the tallest building in the city upon completion, soaring to 600m. The upper portion will house a luxurious hotel and the lower portion will contain office space.

Arup’s services on the project include structural, geotechnical, wind and façade engineering.

The eye-catching skyscraper is the centrepiece of Goldin Metropolitan Tianjin 117 project, one of the largest and most prestigious developments in the city. The overall development comprises villas, residential buildings, offices, hotels, retail, convention centre, entertainment centre, polo club and green space.

Basking in the sunshine, Goldin Finance 117 will have a ‘walking stick’ design topped with a sparkling diamond atrium. Within the stunning diamond-shaped glazed space, guests will swim in the indoor pool and enjoy fine dining with excellent views of the city.

Sustainability is high on the client’s agenda – a LEED® platinum target has been set for the design team.

Cant find. Maybe the GE image is too old.

Is there anyone else convinced that prolonging upwards the four "spikes" at the corners that visually hold up the "diamond", thus creating 4 spires of sorts (not too tall anyway) would improve the looks of the tower?

'an eye catching skyscraper'? Anyways, these new renders certainly make the tower look a lot better than the earlier renders. will the edges be concrete or made from a different colored glass? This tower will probably have a lot of floor space

Well that DongGuang (funny spell checker tries to correct DongGuang with Guangzhou) building is very far away... And here is something that is just a stone throw away from new tower - just a kilometer or so:
