What will be the next urban destinations?

There are places that I am dying to go to and I think others will too. I have a knack in seeing things before they happen.

Forget about San Francisco, Venice or New York....yawwwwnnn. There cities get way too much hype and overglorification. The next places for urban pioneers. Not really in any order

Bucharest
Tiranna
Sofia
Marseilles
Valencia
Naples
Palermo
Algiers
Rotterdam
Porto
Alexandria
Damascus
Tripoli
Haifa
Tehran
Liverpool
Cardiff
Glasgow
Nuuk
Oslo
Helsinki
Kyiv
Montevideo
Cartagena
Bogota
Quito
Havanna
Detroit
St. Louis
Pittsburgh
St. Paul
Milwaukee
St. Johns
Winnipeg
Johannesburg
Nairobi
Rangoon
Kyoto
Kobe

I know It wasn't on You list, but.....Dubai (UAE) will become the next great place to, " see and be seen " by jet-setting celebrities, wealthy tourists, and status seekers. Dubai will join the, world's, most chic cities within the next 3 years. Coinciding with It's, unimaginable, construction boom. It's, already, by design becoming a glitzy capital and " mecca " of different sorts with ALL the cosmopolitan flash associated with " world class " status.

Not sure what you mean by 'nest urban destinations'. Rotterdam, Marseille, Alexandria etc have been a destinations since before Europeans discovered America. And most of these places have had significant tourist numbers for a long time. You should rename the thread 'places that I've never been to but would like to go'.

The New York Times just recently ranked Detroit at #40 in a global list of "The 53 Places to Go in 2008" The only other American cities that made the list were Miami (#5/#6), San Francisco(#39), and San Diego(#44). (Being the New York Times, they ranked New York #53.)

http://www.nytimes.com/ref/travel/20...E_GRAPHIC.html

While the list features many "off-beat" places that tourists generally overlook, (Lisbon, Tunisia, Mozambique, etc.) I'd say it is flattering for the city to be listed.

Here's a quote from the article:
Quote:
Historically crime-ridden Detroit may not spring to mind as a hot tourist spot, but don’t tell that to the city’s bullish hoteliers. Newcomers include the MGM Grand Detroit, the MotorCity Casino Hotel in an old Wonder Bread factory and the historic Book Cadillac Hotel, being transformed into a Westin. Plus, the Detroit Institute of Arts just reopened after a $158 million renovation.
Detroit is positioning itself as a regional entertainment destination with the three new casinos, 1,200+ new downtown hotel rooms, dozens of new downtown restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, etc. Sure it will never be New York or Las Vegas, but even now it is starting to get the good attention it deserves from the national media.

If I had extra coin, I'd be buying a few vacant lots close to downtown detroit right about now.

Naples is awesome! If you want passion, and a city always teetering on the edge of anarchy, then it's a must see place.

Glad to see Cardiff on the list. Visit when there's a big rugby game on. The city centre on such days really has quite a unique vibe about it.

Liverpool is a marvellous city, well worth a visit. I've heard great things about Helsinki too.
