IIM-A to set up extended campus in Hyderabad soon
http://www.business-standard.com/ind...-soon/99564/on

The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), the top business school in the country, will set up a campus in Hyderabad soon, a senior official of the Andhra Pradesh government said today.
He said that the idea was originally mooted when Dr Rajasekhara Reddy was the chief minister. The former CM had invited a team to take a look around the state for finding a suitable place to set up the campus
"The then government offered around 150 acres of land and interest-free loans to create physical infrastructure," the official told PTI, adding that the idea had taken a backseat owing to the sudden demise of Dr Reddy. He said that K Rosaiah, the current chief minister, had written a letter to Dr Vijaypat Singhania, chairman of the IIM-A board, to consider the proposal mooted by Dr Reddy

"The IIM-A board, in a meeting held on June 24, formally agreed to go forward with the idea, and decided to form a taskforce to initiate the formalities," the official said.
Apart from the flagship PGDM course, the Hyderabad campus would offer a slew of new programmes as well as optional ones, sources said.
As the state already has an Indian Institute of Technology, it is not on the list of preferred states for new IIMs that the Central government plans to set up as part of its 11th Five Year Plan.
Accordingly, Dr Reddy had mooted a proposal to IIM-A and IIM-B in 2008, requesting them to set up "extended campuses" in the state.

Bhartiya setting up leather products unit at Nellore SEZ

Facility to focus on European brands, retailers.

Bhartiya International has its own design studio in Italy which gives it the capability to offer complete solutions to its customers. It is not just a producer of products for other brands, but a full-fledged manufacturer with brands of its own.
Chennai, July 6

The Delhi-based Bhartiya International Ltd has started work on a Rs 40-crore leather products factory at the SEZ it is establishing in Nellore.

Mr Snehdeep Aggarwal, Chairman, Bhartiya International, said that the leather products factory would be focussed on the European markets.

It would manufacture a wide range of leather products including bags, belts and accessories under its own brand and for European brands and retailers.

Bhartiya's own brand for leather products, Ultimate, is an established brand in Italy, he said. Work on the 100,000 sq.ft factory has started and will be ready in the next nine months, he said.

The factory is located in the 250-acre Bhartiya International SEZ being set up at Tada, in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 km north of Chennai.

The company had entered into an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Investment Corporation which allocated land for the project in 2008.

Mr Aggarwal said that Bhartiya International will invest Rs 90 crore in the SEZ.

Four Indian companies and two international players have evinced interest in setting up production facilities in the SEZ. Some of the occupants are likely to take a stake in the SEZ project also, but the details are yet to be finalised, he said.

Its own leather products unit coming up in the SEZ would contribute about Rs 100 crore annually to its business, he said.

Bhartiya International has its own design studio in Italy which gives it the capability to offer complete solutions to its customers. It is not just a producer of products for other brands, but a full-fledged manufacturer.

The company has also set up a training centre to provide skilled work force to the factories coming up in the vicinity, he said.

Bhartiya International, a listed company, is a manufacturer of leather apparels and accessories with a turnover of Rs 180 crore in 2009-10.

Draw of lots for small solar projects

Hyderabad, July 6

Draw of lots will be used to select developers of rooftop, small solar photovoltaic and power generation projects at the AP Genco office on Thursday.

This has been necessitated as more than 275 proposals were received in response to a notification issued by the Non-Conventional Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP), for consideration to avail the benefits extended by the Central Government as part of the National Solar Mission.

As per the schedule, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Authority (IREDA), which is the nodal agency and programme administrator for this initiative, will commence the registration of the project developers from July 15.

The allotment will be made to private developers after allocating some projects to Government departments, public undertakings, and eligible solar photovoltaic module manufacturers.

TISS gets nod for opening campuses in Assam, Andhra
Charu Sudan Kasturi,Hindustan Times
New Delhi, July 07, 2010

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has earned the human resource development ministry’s “in principle” nod to open campuses in Guwahati and Hyderabad, in the 74-year-old pioneer institute’s biggest ever expansion move till date. Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal approved the proposal
for the expansion by TISS after a meeting with institute officials on Monday, top government sources told Hindustan Times.

The proposal — aimed at better catering to students from the north-east and south of the country — will need to be approved by Cabinet before it can be implemented.

TISS is India’s oldest school of modern social work, and was started in Mumbai in 1936, expanding in recent years to a campus in Tuljapur — also in Maharashtra.

The Guwahati campus, under the proposal, will reserve 70 per cent seats for students from the north-east and will be funded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER), the sources said.

“We expect this to provide a massive boost in access to top class social science education in the north-east,” a source said.

The Assam government has already allocated 15 acres of land for the project, within the campus of the Assam Engineering College, Guwahati.

The Hyderabad campus is, however, likely to prove trickier for TISS to start.

The HRD ministry in understood to be unsure about central funding for this campus.

“Hyderabad is already home to several major social science institutions – unlike the north-east, which needs greater attention from the government's perspective,” a source said.

TISS may seek funding from the Andhra Pradesh government for the Hyderabad campus. The state government has sanctioned 65 acres of land for this campus.

Peugeot may finalise Andhra Pradesh for car plant this month

Quote:
“The ancillary cluster makes all the difference for any carmaker. Andhra Pradesh on its own does not have any ancillary ecosystem. By setting up a unit in Nellore, the company can take advantage of the existing ancillary network in Tamil Nadu,” the source explained.
In fact, it is almost a decade the car maker exited the country’s market. Peugeot had a joint venture arrangement with Premier Auto Ltd and manufactured cars under PAL-Peugeot. However, the company exited the arrangement after the losses continued to mount.
According to industry sources, it is also important for the company to have a presence in India now as much as it is for states like AP to get the unit. With the presence of every car maker including its rival Renault having a direct presence in India, Peugeot too is likely to expedite its India plans.
The company is also planning to make use of markets like India for derisking its business since it depends for most of the revenue on the European markets for now.
most likely Nellore now)

Hopefully AP gets it. It doesn't matter if it is in Nellore or any other place. We lost out on VW and many others because of lack of ancillary ecosystem as well.

It is always tough getting the first one, when a huge car project comes in the ancillary ecosystem will follow it. I hope Rosaiah and the Goverment of AP are doing all they can to get Peugeot project.

Peugeot plans India entry; may tie-up with Hindustan Motors

Siddharth Vinayak Patankar, July 9, 2010 (New Delhi)

French carmaker PSA Peugeot is working on its India re-entry and a critical partner to fast track the project could well be Hindustan Motors.

HM is in the running to be the critical supplier of engine and other components to PSA Peugeot.

Peugeot is looking to invest 700 million euros or approx Rs 4200 crore in a phased manner to set up its green field operations in India. The French company is planning to initially roll out 100,000 cars annually by 2014.

Andhra Pradesh is the front runner for the project as it is doling out huge tax breaks and other fiscal incentives to PSA.

The NDTV report was enough to send the HM stock soaring going to a 7 per cent intraday high finally settling 4 per cent up for the day.

For now the French car maker says: "PSA Peugeot Citroën can confirm that a project team is working on India as a strategic market. Our team is working actively on the project and has many contacts to build its conclusions."

L&T bags Rs 12000 cr Hyderabad metro rail project

TS Sudhir, Updated: July 14, 2010 13:55 IST

Hyderabad: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has bagged the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project worth Rs 12,132 crore. The bid had initially gone to Maytas Infra, but it was scrapped after they could not achieve financial closure last year, following the Satyam scam. The government had invited fresh bids in July 2009.

The HMR project has been in limbo since it was announced three years ago. The 71-kilometre elevated metro rail project will be done in a public-private-partnership model on the basis of design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT).

Eight consortia had qualified to file the financial bids including those led by Reliance Infrastructure, Lanco Infratech, GVK, L&T, Soma-Straburg, Transstroy and Essar Group.

Larsen & Toubro Ltd is a $9.8 billion technology, engineering and construction group with global operations.

Rosaiah confident of wooing auto makers, ancillary units

Hyderabad, July 22

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, today said his Government was confident of attracting a couple of automotive manufacturers and several auto ancillary units to set up their manufacturing bases in the State.

Speaking after inaugurating the Hyderabad International Auto Show 2010 at the HICC, Mr Rosaiah said a couple of car makers have knocked on the doors of the State and are in negotiations. Something positive was likely to come up in terms of their setting up base there. The State would do everything possible to attract investments in the manufacturing sector, he said.

He toured the venue in an electric-powered four-wheeler and unveiled the Rolls-Royce Ghost, the diesel-powered Toyota Altis sedan, and interacted with representatives of several companies.

“We have developed facilities for auto ancillary units at Toopran and Chevella near the city and are in the process of developing another hub at Naidupeta in Nellore district of the State. Some companies are in the process of setting up their manufacturing centres,” he said. The auto show is being hosted by Vista Entertainment in association with the Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicle Dealers' Association, the Federation of the All-India Dealers' Association.

Of the NH5 stretch in AP (Icchapuram - Vizag - Rajamundry - Vijayawada - Chilakaluripet - Nellore - Tada). Only 2 projects (1. Vijayawada - Chilakaluripet and 2. Chilakaluripet - Nellore) have been awarded. Currently Icchapuram - Vizag tendering is in progress. Others are yet to be up for tender.

Berger Paints plans facility in Andhra Pradesh

To invest Rs. 250 cr to double capacity

KOLKATA: Even as it considers an acquisition proposal, Berger Paints India (BPIL) is rapidly completing a slew of greenfield and brownfield projects which will double its capacity by 2015, besides enabling it to set up its biggest capacity within two years. It is also planning to revive the proposal to set up an automotive paint unit at Jejuri near Pune in Maharashtra.

On the investment plans, he said Rs. 250 crore would be invested by 2015 to double capacity to five lakh tonne. This includes a Rs. 125-crore spend on setting up a water-based paint unit in Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh. With a 1.50-lakh tonne capacity, this plant, coming up 100 km north of Bangalore, would be the company's largest, using state-of-the-art technology with fully-automated operations. “There would be very few workers”, Mr. Dhingra earlier told the shareholders. Around 48 acres were already in possession and another 35 acres were to be acquired for a processing unit to be set up by BP Coating, a division of BPIL.

CM lays stone for Apache amidst protests

GUNTUR: Amidst protests by Left activists, chief minister K Rosaiah laid the foundation stone for the Chinese footwear manufacturing unit Apache at Pottur on the outskirts of Guntur city on Saturday.

Several Left activists who were protesting the government's grant of land for free to the footwear giant were taken into preventive custody.

In an attempt to clear the air over the land issue, Rosaiah said it was the government's responsibility to encourage an atmosphere where industrialists could invest for the overall development of the state. "The government alone cannot create opportunities for the next generations. We need industries to meet the demand for employment, and industrial growth will only help settle the issues," he said.

He said the Apache plant would create jobs for about 3,000 locals once it starts production in nine months' time. The company would be investing nearly Rs 200 crore for the plant through which the state government would also get some tax revenue, he added.

Earlier, addressing a national seminar conducted by the cotton industry in Guntur, Rosaiah suggested to industrialists to come out with concrete proposals to get clearances from the government. Rosaiah hoped that Guntur would develop as a hub of textile industry keeping in view the availability of raw material and manpower. "We should emulate a small country like Sri Lanka which not only is producing world-class cotton but has also become a major exporter of garments," the CM said. He suggested that the textile millers should try to set up garment industries in and around Guntur to reap rich benefits.

Amara Raja Group setting up digital city in Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI: Diversified business house Amara Raja Group is setting up a 500-acre project for electronics goods manufacturing at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, entailing a total investment of Rs 1,700 crore in the next 10 years.

Out of the total investment, the group will put in Rs 500 crore for development of infrastructure, while the rest will come from those firms, which will set up shops there.

According to sources close to the development, Amara Raja Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (ARIPL) is promoting the digital city near Chitoor along with Amara Raja Electronics Ltd (AREL) to bring in electronics hardware manufacturing to the state.

When contacted, an Amara Raja spokesperson said: "An investment of Rs 500 crore is envisaged over a five year period for infrastructure development in the park. Later AREL and other likeminded OEMs and vendors are estimated to invest an additional Rs 1,200 crore over a ten year period into electronics manufacturing and ITES facilities."

The project -- Amara Raja Digital World City (ARDWC), will offer a significant portion to AREL as it will be the "anchor" company of ARDWC.

"The project will be developed under IT/ITES SEZ category and the group has received in-principle approval. The land has already been acquired and the notification of the project is under process," a source said.

The company spokesperson said that the economic activity in the park over the next 10 years is expected to be upwards of Rs 10,000 crore per annum.

"The project is likely to provide employment to more than 20,000 people. The location has been selected to provide non-migratory employment opportunities in line with Amara Raja's core purpose of creating access and opportunities to more people," the official added.

‘AP petro-chem investment region to spur growth in Vizag, Kakinada'

Visakhapatnam, Aug. 5

The Andhra Pradesh Petroleum, Chemicals and Petro-chemicals Investment Region (PCPIR), coming up between Vizag and Kakinada in an area of more than 600 sq km, has huge potential for triggering growth in the zone.

It enjoys advantages that other PCPIRs such as those in Gujarat and West Bengal do not have, according to Mr B.R. Meena, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. He is also the Chairman of the AP PCPIR.

He was speaking at a round-table session on the PCPIR organised by the Vizag chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Thursday.

Mr Meena said the master plan for the AP PCPIR was being prepared.

“Our PCPIR is much better placed in comparison with the ones proposed at Gujarat and West Bengal. Its proximity to the Krishna-Godavari basin, with its huge gas reserves, is a great advantage. The spread of the AP PCPIR (600 sq km) as well as the coastline (140 km) are much larger and there is no problem with regard to water and power,” he said.

Besides the Visakha refinery of the HPCL at Vizag, one more with a capacity of 15 million tonnes was proposed by an HPCL-led consortium near Vizag. The GMR group was also setting up a refinery of a similar capacity in the Kakinada special economic zone (KSEZ).

Environmental concerns: He said there was no need for concern on the environmental front as the State Government was preparing an exhaustive report on the related aspects and all steps would be taken to address the problem. “The global economic recession has slowed down the projects but the State Government is keen to go ahead with it and this PCPIR will become a reality and will transform the region,”

Mr M.S. Rao, Development Commissioner of the Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone, spoke about the existing SEZs in the PCPIR and the ones likely to come up. He said Andhra Pradesh was in the forefront in setting up SEZs and many more would come up in the PCPIR.

Mr V.N. Vishnu, Municipal Commissioner of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, spoke of the GVMC's role in the establishment of the PCPIR. Capt. Sriram Ravi Chander, the Chairman of the Vizag zone of the CII, welcomed the gathering.

Mr Raj Khalid, Indian representative of the Port of Antwerp (Belgium), spoke about the petrochem region in the vicinity of the port, said to be the second biggest in the world, and promised all help to the AP PCPIR.
