I'm here in Shanghai right now and to tell you there alot of high-rises especially in the city centre. There are also alot of developments happening. But certainly it can't outdone New York

I knew the city has alot of scrapers. But its mostly concentrated in the city centre. Its not like HK where you have skyscrapers even in the outskirts or in new towns.

WANCH, welcome to Shanghai.
I just came back home from some nightlife fun in New York City, I LOVE NY. But honestly saying, having lived both, Shanghai is the future.

Don't get me wrong, again, I LOVE NEW YORK. Quite a few elite New Yorkers are rushing to Shanghai or Beijing. New York has its uniqueness that Shanghai will never replace, ie the cultural diversity, basically this is because the US is a global immigration country, and NY is the biggest city in the States. To this point Shanghai is more like Tokyo, but way more internationally potential for Shanghai for its global reputation.

All in all, take the fact that Shanghai is the biggest urban city in the most populous country with the fastest growing economy in the world.

Nevertheless, this is not a city vs city thread. My focus is on the rapid improving society of Urban China today, represented by Shanghai, so as to clear the stubborn impression exist in the western world (or even more stubborn in some of the developing world) 's western-centered people's mind on China's social form.

China is China, and China doesn't have to follow the western mind-setting of what is right and what is wrong.
Go, China!

Shanghai is nothing like Tokyo or Hong Kong. Its character closely resembles that of NYC. Many highrises scattered all over the place. There are places in Shanghai where it can easily be mistaken for Lower East Side NYC. The resemblance between the two cities is uncanny. It is also as unchinese as NYC is unamerican. Its lifestyle is way beyond reach of the average Chinese. People from other provinces, even people from booming cities like Changchun Chengdu or Wuhan complain about how expensive it is. It would be inaccurate for Shanghai to represent China. As you can tell from the video, the way people are dressed and the close proximity it shares with Western/developed East Asian culture, it is decades ahead of the rest of the country, almost on par with Taiwan, Korea or Hong Kong.

But will Shanghai's Metropolitan Area ever eclipse the wealth of New York Tri-State Area?

Shanghai is a window of China, like NY to the States.

Have you been to major cities besides Shanghai today? Name a few: Harbin, Dalian, Hangzhou, Xiamen, Changsha, Guangzhou, Shengzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, etc. they are all very trendy cities.

The problem exist in China today is the difference between rurual areas and urban areas, not only the areas themselves, but also the migrate workers who came to the cities for jobs. They are what we say the people on edge.

I thought Shanghai has a lot of skyscrapers all across the urban expanse, not just the city centre. Perhaps people have to venture outside beyond the tourist sights to see that obvious fact, but any high-level vantage point should easily reveal that fact.

Well, Shanghai is a vast city, there are so many places that you can develop to certain concepts you like to.

Have you really been to NYC? have a careful look on Google Earth. the highrises only concentrated in two areas on the island there. In Shanghai they are much more scattered. Being looks like NYC is nothing to be proud of . In fact I can't find a single building in Shanghai which reminds me of NYC. Shanghai is Shanghai, it has unique character and doesn't need to resemble another city. of course New York is great, but for Shanghai it's just a matter of time to overtake it.

it seems that you are from Shanghai, have you ever been to other mainland cities? You are so ignorant of your own country

Shanghai's GDP per capita is 7000 US dollars, for HK, Korea or Taiwan this figure is 20000-30000, Shanghai is still way behind in most major aspects.

The aerial pictures of Shanghai rather remind me of Brazilian cities like Sao Paolo or Belo Horizonte (or vice versa), although there are few really tall towers in those cities.

Hong Kong GDP per capita (nominal) of 2006 : $ 27,504

South Korea GDP per capita (nominal) of 2006 : $ 18,391

Taiwan GDP per capita (nominal) of 2006 : $ 15,936

Shanghai GDP per capita (nominal) of 2006 : $ 7,189 / $ 7500 (two methods of calculation, read the second link)

And note that Shanghai is not the richest place in China ( Shanghai does not top the mainland Chinese cities GDP per capita ranking )

And what would Shanghai's GDP per capita be if the Chinese authorities in Beijing let the yuan float like rich countries do? One dollar for only 5 yuan? Or would the dollar be even cheaper?
