In modern Afrikaans seekoei when broken down does literally mean sea-cow, but I guess in previous forms of the language see could also mean lake as well as sea. That would be similar to German which uses See for lake and older forms of English too (think of the biblical Sea of Galilee, which is a lake).

Last saturday I went hiking with my girlfriend on a beautiful path in the Gola del Furlo, central Italy. At the end of our descent from the mountain, the path became a very narrow road, and we found this sign I've never seen elsewhere:

The message reads "Hairpin turn with space for external maneuver". Basically the hairpin turn was so tight that builders had to allocate extra space on the external side of the turn, so that the turn was more a loop than a hairpin...

It does get slightly depressing when you see nothing but the road all day. But it wasn't a problem since I drove there for the first time.

Would anyone know what are these signs for? Those are raod signs used in probably in Bohemia - Austrian Hungarian Empire around 1910 or later in the 20s in Czechoslovakia.

Here they say, international signs, same time period.

A real sign.

1938-39.

Bumpy road | Bends
Intersection (priority to the right) | Level crossing with barriers

I don't know about the rest

Even better question: how many people got lost because the roadsigns were stolen? (I'm presuming they were stolen and not just old signs that had been thrown away)... There is a big problem with theft of all sorts of surprising things in SA, such as power cuts because cables have been stolen, phone lines down because they have been stolen etc.

Wow, and I thought stealing road signs is common only on the Balkans...

Weird signs spotted in Timisoara, Romania:

Ai grijă de inima ta = Take care of your heart
I would rather say take care of your legs after seeing how the pavement looks like...

First motorcycle parking that I've seen in Romania.
