There was nothing in the last issue to say it was becoming a monthly publication, in fact the editor makes a point of the Guide being a fortnightly mag.

Thanks lazygamer, I was beginning to think I'd imagined it had changed to a monthly publication! Strange the Editor didn't draw attention to this in the March issue!

My point exactly, I was expecting an issue yesterday it's well over a month since the last one dropped through the mailbox. I was starting to think it had gone under all together, but on Monday a Leeds Guide rep was spotted at the Bettakultcha event at the Corn Exchange.

Anybody recieved/bought the latest Leeds Guide, I have seen it for sale in the local Co-op. Alas it's not dropped through the letterbox, which means I guess my subscription has run out. It's a poor do that they couldn't have informed if that's the case, not to mention the change from fortnightly to monthly.

Naked Apes: Leeds market stars in new TV drama

shoppers at Leeds Market came to a standstill as the cameras rolled for a new medical drama in the heart of the city.

Extras, actors and technicians drew crowds of stunned shoppers who were eager to catch a glimpse of Channel Four’s filming for their new black-comedy Naked Apes.

The drama, which is set to take a prime-time slot, delves into the lives of three paramedics and their daily mission to reach the end of their shifts.

Actors Rhys Thomas, Richard Madden and Kayvan Novak are the three angels of mercy tasked with saving ill people in Leeds - as well as unravelling their own complex lives.

But to make sure they knew exactly what they were letting themselves in for, the trio endured a 12-hour night shift with ambulance crews on the streets of Leeds.

Richard Madden, who plays Ashley, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Friday nights with the ambulance crews of Leeds was definitely an eye-opener.

“We saw many sights and ultimately saw a whole different side to Leeds.

“There were a lot of drunk people, quite a few elderly people and we even saw a dead body.

“I have even been mistaken for a real paramedic but it was so thrilling to go out on a job and race through the traffic.

“But some people treated it like a taxi service.”

Rhys Thomas, who plays Stuart, even got to help deliver a baby during his stint with the paramedic crews.

He added: “It was just brilliant filming in Leeds.

“Everyone in the city is really friendly, lots of fun and just generally lovely people.

“We might even get the chance to come back to Leeds if we decide to film a second series.”

Naked Apes was inspired by paramedic Tom Reynolds’ book Blood, Sweat and Tea and was penned by Brian Fillis, who is well-known for The Curse of Steptoe and An Englishman In New York.

The six-part drama is set to run on Channel Four during the summer.

Channel Four’s head of drama, Camilla Campbell, added: “We are very excited to be greenlighting a new drama series for Channel Four, which will take us behind the flashing lights of the ambulance service to where the real drama happens.

“With Brian Fillis’ unflinching and comic look at modern day relationships, this is a series that has a voice all of its own, and we’re really looking forward to seeing his vision realised on screen.”

On Channel Four so it can't be that bad, better than BBC Four or something.

BBC Four? Don't you mean BBC Three?

There is a BBC Four too, I like BBC three so didn't use it as an example.

Yep, here's the story http://www.guardian.co.uk/help/insid...n-local-update

Terrible news that will lead back to Johnston Press having an almost total monopoly on news in the city again. There's certainly a gap to be filled here in local news coverage though; best get in on that market before I do! Tim Cook in Harrogate is taking thousands of customers from the Harrogate Advertiser by producing quality, neutral stories. His site now gets more hits than the advertiser. Guardian Leeds I believe was getting over 30,000 hits.

Massive shame about the close of that site. As well as significant local stories, it provided a great forum for debate and discussion, and gave the sense of being in a real 'community' (featuring events, guest blogs, food reviews etc). The YEP is very tired and rigid by comparison, and I hate the new layout of it! The only bit of it I bother reading are the weekly pub reviews....

All of the above that SK mentions [ community, forum, debate, events, blogs, food reviews ] can be found on the Leeds CultureVulture site. I know it doesn't carry the Guardian name and national banner, but it's really good and they hold occasional events and get togethers.

Indeed- the new layout is just dreadful. Most of the time I can't even be bothered to read the news on it.

Indeed I too am hugely disappointed about the demise of Guardian Leeds - it's an invaluable resource to the city. Make sure to add your comments below the main article - you never know, the decision could be reversed.

Ditto it is certainly a shame to see the closure of the Guardian Leeds website. No doubt that not rolling out the local website to other localities considering only Leeds, Cardiff and Edinburgh has such websites (wonder what made the Gruniad choose Leeds over it's native Manchester) as well as having the local websites completely invisible on the main page of the Guardian website would have affected the blogs visibility. It does certainly lose a welcome alternative to the likes of the Yorkshire Post, Yorkshire Evening Post and BBC Leeds.

Bummer.

I actually got out of the house a few times to go to some of the events that were advertised on GuardianLeeds. It was really helping to hook up like-minded individuals across the city. And, of course, provided plenty of opportunities for spleen venting.

Comment from the author of the Guardian article...

Quote:
"Thanks for all the replies. We are reading them and clearly hear how much the Guardian local sites were valued in the communities they covered.

On that note, in conversation with editors here earlier, an interesting idea was mooted: would any of the local communities or individuals affected be interested in carrying on the Cardiff/Leeds/Edinburgh blogs? Or fundraising a sum to enable us to continue? If We could find an alternative - community-supported? - funding model, that could extend the local project....

Worth pondering? Any thoughts?"
