hkskyline's SHANGHAI Holiday #1 - Welcome Back

It took a year for me to get these photos online. Last Christmas, fellow HK forumer InitialD18 and I decided to head to Shanghai for a holiday to see for ourselves how much history is left and how much modern stuff has sprung up. We were not disappointed. Although the weather wasn't the greatest, we did come up with a huge photoset, and now I bring to you - Shanghai. This first part of many more parts to come will focus on what tourists may not see - side streets and neighborhoods away from the touristy areas.

A lot of Shanghai's side streets look like this - full of activity and details for observation.

This type of architecture is also a common sight. But this street is not in the Bund.

Pedestrianization is a major theme in Chinese cities these days, and that applies beyond the typical tourist traps.

Of course, Shanghai also has plenty of shopping for those not so interested in architecture.

While Shanghai is a very big city, there are still many quaint street scenes.

Looks like people like to dry their clothes in a more environmentall-friendly fashion.

I really like this kind of street scene.

Although Shanghai has a lot of skyscrapers, a lot of the developments in this neighorhood are smaller in scale.

The reality is, much of the old needs to make way for the new, as Shanghai emerges from a long sleep.
