The arch used to be a balcony. I hope they reinstate it although I doubt they will. The owners have the building have obviously put a lot of work into it. They have readded the lanterns on the side of the building which were removed in the 70s and they have repaired the sign which had become damaged. Just be glad that the windows in the archway are not uPVC!

great pics, i think a smaller building in similar stylings to selfridges would be good here, maybe a good place for the CUBE?

Actually I think it is. The building on the right hand side of the picture under "Holder's Grand Concert Rooms, 88, 89, 90, Coleshill Street, Birmingham." looks very like it (with all its windows filled in etc.)

Well the street names are different and it looks nothing like it ?

http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/Birmingham.htm

According to Pevsner the one on Park Street is the former London Museum Concern Hall of 1863.

edit: tried to use image of site.

Agreed, but the real shame is the stuff that then got demolished afterwards like the Grand Theatre of Varieties, Birmingham which bought it in 1963. Wasn't this where Rackhams/HOF is now?

Not sure as there doesn't look to be a gap for Cherry Street to the Cathedral?

You're right (again). Looks like it was further up - maybe where the Lewis Department Store building is. See link below:

Bet there used to be something nice where HOF is now though...

I always though that the Birmingham Grand Theatre was where HoF/Rackhams is now, or at least part of the site.

Birminghams Beorma Tower Gets The Horne
Published on 28-05-2008 by Skyscrapernews.com

The designs for an ashamedly blocky 30 floor tower by Trevor Horne Architects could be the next tall building proposal for Birmingham.

The scheme by Sahlia Investments occupies a 0.77 hectare site between Digbeth, Well Lane, Park Street and Allison Street literally over the road from the famously organic Selfridges store that has put Birmingham on the map of modern architecture.

If built it will contain offices, a hotel and basement parking in a new urban quarter that will ring a revamped public area at Orwell Place.

The architects claim their scheme was inspired by the Satellite City Towers of Pritzker Prize winning architect, Luis Barragán although the complex geometric form of the scheme and the airy glass cladding certainly flies in the face of Barragán's soaring forms and strong use of Mexican colours.

The blockiness is designed as a deliberate visual counterpoint to the curvaceousness of Selfridges although it rejects a traditional straight up tower shape for something with slipped elements and projecting sections that are suspended in mid-air out creating a more complicated form.

At ground level the existing site is a challenging one to develop as it contains several listed buildings. The architects have come up with a solution for this that will see them retained with their facades worked into the proposals creating a variety of old and new.

Still at the pre-planning stage, the scheme is likely to be refined further before an official planning application is filed.

I've found some more images:

Beorma Quarter
Birmingham
Client: Salhia Investments
Status: Pre Planning

Inspired by Luis Barrgan's Satelite City Towers, we believe a series of tall structures are a fine counter point to the curvaceous Selfridges building. A series of buildings with public spaces between create a city within a city.

Our client wants to create a high quality, sustainable and low energy development. The site is 0.77 hectares and is bordered by Park Street, Digbeth, Allison Street and Well Lane in the Digbeth area of Birmingham. The site sits on a geological fault line between sandstone and clay and has a fall of 5 metres from Park Street to Allison Street.

Our site is the location of the original settlement of Birmingham in the 12th century. The existing buildings define the seven remaining burgage plots in the city, also Orwell Passage and the rear of Digbeth Buildings follow the original Hersum Ditch line separating the original settlement from pasture land beyond.

The Grade 2 listed Cold Store is refurbished to accommodate the Birmingham Voluntary Services Council and an Innovation Centre. We intend to replace the existing engine room to create a public open space. The locally listed buildings 136-7 are retained and refurbished and the 1930's façade of 138-139 is integrated in our proposed office building at the corner of Park Street and Digbeth.
A pedestrian public route dissects the site connecting Park Street via a new public space (Orwell Place) to Allison Street. Along this route are shops, restaurants / cafes and main entrances to the office buildings, hotel and the Coldstore.
