The current Hungerburgbahn has replaced the funicular service that was in operation between 1906 and 2005 (8th December). The length of the track was 839 m and the rise was 287 m.

The new one opened for public on 1st of December 2007.

It's a shame that the old one was replaced. It hat better connection with public transport, plus the cars were fairly new (about 20-25 years old). Could have been renovated for a nothing compared to the enormous price of the new one.

Vier Stationen unterschiedlich gestaltet
Die vier Stationen - Congress, Löwenhaus, Alpenzoo und Hungerburg - wurden alle entsprechend der spezifischen topographischen Situation unterschiedlich gestaltet. Architektin Zaha Hadid nahm hierbei besonders an Naturphänomenen wie frostigen Moränen und der Bewegung von Gletschern und Eis Anleihe.

Weitere Auszeichnungen
Seit ihrer Inbetriebnahme konnte die Sektion I Hungerburg der Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen noch weitere international bedeutende Architekturpreise für sich gewinnen.

So erhielt das Projekt den Royal Institute of Bristish Architects (RIBA) sowie eine Anerkennung des Landes Tirol für neues Bauen.

Beim internationalen Skiareatest wurden die Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen mit dem Innovationspreis für Architektur ausgezeichnet.
