I think that is just to give people an example of the look of it. The final bridge is still to be designed as far as I am aware.

Yes this bridge is truly needed, but that is no excuse to hold the country to ransom. There is no way this bridge should even cost over £1bn, yet alone £4bn...

The centre pylon is to be built on an existing rock (Beamer Rock), which shipping clearly has to avoid anyway. As to protection, like you say this is an artist's impression and the final design will likely change.

£4bn is ridiculous, that's £2bn per km!!!!

That's ten times as expensive per Km than the Channel Tunnel ffs which cost £0.2bn per km (£10bn for 50km).

I know that was a few years ago but this is a ridiculous amount of money that could be much better spent on transport in Scotland.

The Bridge is made of pure gold and the road will be diamond encrusted, whilst the supports are to be made of platinium. All in all $8 Billion seems very reasonable.

Nah, even with all that it’s still over prices, plus you know it will end-up a few decades behind schedule...

Yep, £4 Billion - no one in Scotland can understand why it's costing so much money...

The first forth road bridge, the suspension one, was built in 1960 and cost... £40 million! Even allowing for inflation and new infrastructure, there is no way the bridge can realistically cost £4 billion!

However, the Forth estuary does experience strong tidal movements, and so the bridges need to be hugely overengineered to withstand the tides and the strong North Sea winds. Just look at the Forth Railway bridge - it's been engineered so strong, it could actually support hanging the the deck of the existing forth road bridge full of cars and still carry trains across it!.

Anyway, I think this is what the bridge is more likely going to look like:

What a sight, though!!

Looks amazing indeed. But still: why the huge costs? Has the pound devaluated that much?

The politicians probably said that so that they look good when the bridge comes in at a much lower price!

Hi guys!

I think the 4bn is for the tunnel option (it would be far longer than 2km...)

(but it is too much yet for a 10km long 4 tubes tunnel (2 for cars, 2 for trains)

Journalists are stupid all over the word...

4 billion pound i pretty darn expensive for such an average (looking) bridge. Is there a strong current or something? Some countries build 600 miles of motorway for that amount of money...

The bridge design has not been decided upon. Those are only to give people an idea of what it will look like.

This thread should instead be called: "World's biggest waste of money in Scotland". It's a beautiful bridge, but there is no way it should be that expensive. Isn't there ANY other solution? I sincerely hope you can avoid such theft, and do much better things with it than a single bridge, no matter how beautiful it is.

No, this is the figure released by the SNP and it is for the bridge. See:
