MUMBAI | The Imperial Towers | 249m | 60fl | U/C

Set to become the tallest residential towers in India, the luxurious SD Towers in Mumbai will soar 60 storeys above ground. A challenging project, Arup’s facade and design specialists ensured that the key issues were not only resolved but produced added benefits.

In a region subject to heavy rainfall, high wind pressure and hot and humid weather conditions, the facade design needed to incorporate protection yet still allow natural daylight and comfort for occupants. At the same time the client was keen to enhance the buildings' view internally and externally.

Arup provided an innovative solution that addressed these concerns. It also created a facade that performs better in terms of strength, safety, weather, durability and maintenance.

Ensuring the original architectural intent, Arup designed windows with an identical appearance of operable and fixed sashes on both the inside and the outside. This was achieved by using a custom designed aluminum extrusion suite. The view from inside of the building was further enhanced by using large panes of glass with fewer frames.

Arup is working with the client in an ongoing role, providing a review of the major suppliers and an audit of the quality assurance and quality control systems of each of the short-listed contractors and suppliers. The team is also involved with periodical site inspections, helping the client and architect to achieve the expected quality of the installed facade.
