Chattanooga, Tennessee: Downtown

Chattanooga's Downtown is located along the banks of the Tennessee River, east of Moccasin Bend. The Downtown area is near the site of Ross's Landing, and Chattanooga grew into a small river port. Later, the vicinity became the northern terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, which connected with Atlanta (then called "Terminus", later "Marthasville"). This railroad terminus was the beginning of Chattanooga's rich railroad history, including a Civil War battles in the area over these railroads.

Looking up Broad Street at the Tivoli Theatre. The Tivoli Theatre was built in 1921 and was once called "the Jewel of the South". Considered by many to easily be the nicest theatre in Tennessee, it had a domed ceiling in the lobby and was one of the first buildings in Tennessee to be air-conditioned. The theatre now houses the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. The entrance to the Maclellan Building, built in 1924, is in the foreground.
