I really love North Korea. It's just so mysterious. It does boggle the mind that I have encountered people on message boards who will defend the place. Amazing.

I wish I could get a car and freely explore North Korea. Visit the palaces, the death camps, eat fine North Korean cuisine and see the absolute worst parts of DPRK. I doubt as a U.S. citizen I could even get on one of those tours they have.

This is the "Unification Highway" which extends from Pyongyang to the DMZ and was built in the early nineties. Interesting fact is that most major highways and highrise projects in North Korea were built in the late 80s and and early 90s, when the economy was going down the tubes. I guess you don't really need to have a strong growing economy to have a construction boom.

I think these nice pictures we see of North Korea are pictures that are authorized to leave the country. The rest of the country probably looks pretty awful, maybe except for the neighborhoods where leaders of cities and other privileged people live because you know government officials, soldiers, guards, and the hottest North Korean women are living the good life.

I once saw this picture showcase made by some Russian who walked around with communist t-shirts. They showed the real North Korea, with all those slums (which are also visible on GE) and rural shanty towns.
You usually only see those apartment buildings, but check this kind of stuff; ![]() ![]() If the pics dont work check here |

@Czas na Żywiec, I meant political system
And to be honest, there would be no point in building 10 lanes freeway in Poland, in 70' or 80' for example

Our Eastern-European political systems before 1989 were the apogee of democracy compared to what those people have to put up with...
Our parents could listen to Radio Free Europe, in North Korea they send to the torture camps all those who tamper with their radios or TV's (pre-set to receive just the official national station). Those people's lives are controlled down to the tiniest detail, no revolution like those in 1989 can possibly start there. |

I think that I found this glorious monument to the achievements, caring and generosity of the Great and Dear Leaders (pan north to see the commieblocks in the background, it straddles the Pyongyang end of the Reunification Highway):
