It might not collapse as soon as some might believe. I heard of kingdoms remaining isolated from the rest of the world for hundreds of years and these people are like the tribal people who do everything not for money or fame. But because it is ingrained in them. So hopefully, the regime lasts longer than just two heirs....

they didn't have the internet back then or cell phones that work globally, satellites that can spy on them.

So let's just assume that he is capable of creating technology that can spy on it's people and help furthur his image. Don't you think he will just find a way to remain in power?

The NKs prohibit photos of practically EVERYTHING within their borders, BUT, does that stop Google from putting up high-res aerial images of the place, including the DMZ and the treaty village at Panmunjom?

(too bad their own people are prohibited from checking them out...)

I don't agree. Successor to current Great Leader could make all the difference. It won't stay that long, world is changing too fast.

I read somewhere that Kim Jong-Il admonished his son because he was too 'soft' to become a leader in his opinion. So if he designates a tough guy like him as successor... there is no hope.

Especially as the people will resist any kind of change because they are so indoctrinated that they believe the "Dear Leader" is the son of God.

China and Japan won't allow that to happen. For North Korea, openess = mass suicide of ruling class. It will remain a buffer zone for some more and more times to come.

It's not a nightmare to them. Remember Jonestown?

Basically, "The Leader" is letting the vast majority of his ppl believe that the world is far worse then NK and that in reality, they live in the best nation in the world.

Truth be told, you may see a mass suicide by the ppl of NK if their nation were threatened. Here's an interesting fact about Jonestown. Yes everyone died from the Kool-Aid, but Jim Jones died from a gunshot to the head.

How do we manage to save NK without this situation "going down" or by a mass exodus of refugees crossing into SK or China?

In North Korea is now the same situation as it was in the former Soviet Union but even worse. I mean that in the USSR there were many prohibitions as well, but it was, at least, developing country.
The only solution of this problem is an overthrow of the government, I think; brave example is Yugoslavia and USSR.

The US won't do it because it can't anymore. Kim would throw a nuke at Seoul or Tokyo in that case.

I know it is the information age but my brother still claims you can't judge a place until you have been to it
B/c I like to ask people what they think of their homeland and such.

Interesting. I guess they're designed more for tanks moving around the country than private cars.

Start of "motorway" to Pyongyang, in the Demilitarized Zone:

Apparently there is also a sign around here (in the opposite direction) that says:
Seoul - 70 km.

even though the motorway looks as if there wasn't any cars on it for quite a while, still the sign is like a new!! and interesting is that the motorways are kept in pretty good condition!
