1536. March 24-25, celebrating the 20th annual spring open days organised by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI).
The Castle Della Manta is one of 670 historic, naturalistic and artistic jewels sponsorized by Fondo Ambiente Italiano, FAI works to preserve and promote Italy’s cultural heritage through education, restoration and annual open days. The Baronial Hall (Salone Baronale) is notable for the fresco cycle decorating its walls, a rare masterpiece of Late Gothic painting in northern Italy. The work is attributed to the anonymous Master of Castello della Manta. The cycle, completed soon after 1420, portrays the Nove Prodi, the Nine Worthies with their female counterparts. The artist may have used as models members of the House of the Margraves of Saluzzo. The figures are shown wearing precious contemporary clothing. 1537. Arch of Janus, Rome, Latium.
The Arch of Janus is the only quadrifrons triumphal arch preserved in Rome, across a crossroads in the Velabrum-Forum Boarium. It was built in the early 4th century of spolia, possibly in honour of Constantine I or Constantius II. Its current name is probably from the Renaissance or later and is not ancient. The name is derived from its four-fronted, four-arched structure. In the Middle Ages, the Frangipane family transformed the building into a fortress and so it survived intact up until 1830. Then the attic and top were torn down because they were erroneously believed not to belong to the original structure. 1540. Caltagirone, the 142 steps of the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte that connect the lower town with the older upper town, Sicily.
...The upright of each step is decorated with ceramic tiles, offering a colourful alternative to the grey lava stone of the horizontal parts.
