SOCHI | 2014 Winter Olympics - Federation Island Development News
I just found this and thought I'd share it with you guys. Seems the Arab world isn't the only place mega artificial island projects are being carried out...
[Business Times Online] Enter Federation Island, a massive construction that is due to grace the Black Sea waters off Sochi in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Keen to show off its oil-driven wealth, Russia hopes to rival Dubai’s Palm and World artificial islands with the ambitious project. Seven main islands and a series of smaller ones will imitate that shape of the world’s largest country, complete with luxury villas and cliffside homes, miniature forests and meandering rivers. The complex will have luxury homes, shops and offices over 330 hectares with room to house 25,000 people. Allied Business Consultants, an Abu Dhabi company, will spend $6.2 billion building Federation Island, which is overseen by M-Industria of St Petersburg. To design the grandiose project, M-Industria brought in the Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat, who is also leading the revamping of Canning Town for the 2012 London Olympics. The artificial island, which will include the rivers, mountains and plains of Russia’s diverse landscape, will be connected to the shoreline, 300yds away, by a bridge and two tunnels. Once it is completed, it will no longer be necessary to brave -20C temperatures and days-long train rides to visit Russia’s Siberian heartland. Congrats Russia!
This will leave Palm Island for dead; far more tasteful design and seems more subtle; not tacky like Dubai's aspirations. The 2014 Winter Olympics are going to be fantastic for Russia. I visited Russia (from Irkutsk, Moscow and St. Petersburg) in June 2007 and I remember seeing things about the 2014 bid; I'm glad Sochi won!! |

I think that project is disproportionate and extremely exaggerated. Why they don't just build alongside the existant coastline which is already very beautiful. With that 'Russia' island they destroy more than they obtain

You're wrong. That coastline is pretty poor in the urbanisation, so we need some big projects there.

this ranks up the top with probably what doha is conceiving at the moment and it looks damn fine! would they also start building skyscrapers inland to provide a backdrop to the federation island development just hope they don't go overboard like that place called dubai...
