I recently went on my annual vacation to Port Colborne, Ontario, where my grandparents (American, by the way) have a cottage on Lake Erie. Here are pictures from the drive up, showing off some of what I see when I head up there every Summer (and in recent years, early Springs). On the way, I made a detour and drove along Lake Canandaigua to see the city of Canandaigua, and then took another short detour north of the Buffalo area to get gas, so this route breaks off from my normal route a little bit.

Later on, I'll show other pictures from my drives, such as pictures on the way back.

Cochranville, PA

Strasburg, PA

Statue of Liberty in the Susquehanna River, north of Harrisburg near Fishing Creek.

Crossing the Susquehanna River on US 322. The walkway along the southbound lanes carries the Appalachian Trail across the river.

Liverpool, PA

Christy Matthewson Memorial Stadium, Bucknell University, Lewisburg

Allenwood, PA

The Pike Drive-In Theater, near Allenwood.

Montoursville, PA, from Bald Eagle Mountain.

Williamsport, PA, from Bald Eagle Mountain.

Williamsport, PA

Bridge across the Susquehanna River connecting Williamsport to South Williamsport, located on the other side.

North of Williamsport.

I-99 construction in northern Lycoming County.

Mountains in Tioga County.

Mansfield University, Mansfield

Mansfield, PA

This exit, near Tioga for PA 287, used to be where the northernmost portion of the future I-99 expressway was completed. The expressway is now completed several miles more, into New York.

Bypassing a factory near Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, that the old US Route 15 used to go past.

Bypassing houses near Lawrenceville.

Entering New York on the new portion of the expressway.

The northernmost completed section of the expressway is now just south of Lindley, New York. Work is being done to link this area to the expressway near Corning and Painted Post.

The Green Shingles Inn, south of Lindley. In a couple years I'll be bypassing this place.

Scenery that I won't be seeing once the new section of expressway is built and I begin using that.

I-86 west of Painted Post.

Windmills near Cohocton, New York.

Time for a detour to go see Canandaigua, New York.

Wayland, NY

North Cohocton, NY

Scenery along NY Route 21.

Naples, NY

Canandaigua Lake, the westernmost of the major Finger Lakes.

Canandaigua, NY (thread to come later)

Lima, NY

Rochester skyline from I-390.

University at Buffalo from I-290.

Another detour to rural Niagara County to get cheap gas.

North Tonawanda, NY

Niagara Falls, NY

Crossing the border into Canada at Niagara Falls.

Cenotaph at the Canadian customs.

Niagara Region farmland.

Convenience store in Netherby, a small rural crossroads community that is technically a part of the city of Niagara Falls.

More farmland on the way towards Port Colborne.

Arriving at the beach near Port Colborne!

While on vacation, I went boating and waterskiing on the Niagara River with relatives. Here are pictures from the water, all from the west channel of the Niagara River (the waterway on the western side of Grand Island).

Niagara Falls, Ontario skyline

Niagara Falls, New York skyline

Buffalo skyline

Strawberry Island, an American island off of Buffalo.

A modern house on the Niagara Parkway, north of Fort Erie, Ontario.

A restaurant were Black Creek is crossed by the Niagara Parkway and empties into the Niagara River.

Here's some pictures from Niagara Falls, New York, mainly from the Maid of the Mist. As much that I am going to Buafflo/Niagara Falls/the entire region, I have never been on the Maid of the Mist before.

The Rainbow Bridge, crossing into Canada.

The Rainbow Tower, built in 1947, at Customs on the Canadian side.

Looking up at buildings near Clifton Hill, in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The American falls, with the Bridal Veil falls on the right in some pictures.

The United Office Building peeks out from behind the American falls.

The Canadian falls.

Looking up at the Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The Rainbow Bridge.

The Ontario Power Company Generating Station, built in 1905 at the base of the Canadian falls.

A couple of old power generator flumes emptying into the river.

Loooking downriver at the site of the Schoellkopf Power Plant. The rock wall on the right is where part of the building collapsed into the river. The artificial stone wall is where the other portion of the building existed, at the bottom of the gorge. Above the stone wall is the Schoellkopf Geological Museum.

Looking downriver at the Whirlpool Bridge, with a highrise in Niagara Falls, New York, on the right.

The American falls from land.

A motel on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Niagara Falls.

Here's the final installment of pictures from my trip. These are the pictures from my drive back, with a short detour to Niagara Falls, Ontario, then crossing over into the U.S. for gas, then driving along the Niagara River and picking up my usual route. I took another small detour to see Middleburg, and that was it. I might be going up again for a quick weekend, but I can't say if that's for sure, so this is probably it for these pictures until next year.

Niagara Falls Memorial Arena, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The arena will be demolished in 2010. The full thread for the Victoria Centre neighborhood in Niagara Falls is HERE.

The Grand Island Front Range Lighthouse, built in 1917 and located on the grounds of the Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island, New York. The lighthouse originally sat in front of the Buffalo General Electric Company's River Station as an aid for canal boats to dock there.

Cranes at the old Wickwire-Spencer Steel Corporation, on River Road in Tonawanda, New York, across the Niagara River from Grand Island. The steel plant closed in 1964 and made rod and wire products.

Varysburg, NY

A country road disappearing into the woods in Wyoming County.

A grizzly bear carved out of a tree trunk in Wyoming County.

Lindley, NY

The Green Shingles Inn, which is where the surface road for U.S. Route 15 ends and the expressway begins.

Entering Pennsylvania on the new Route 15/future I-99 expressway, with a nice view of the mountains now.

The Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum, South Williamsport, PA. The construction cones are there because the Little League World Series was going on, and cars were slowed down to accomodate pedestrians.

Delta Place Station, near Lewisburg, PA

Time for a detour to see Middleburg, Pennsylvania.

Middleburg, PA. The full thread can be seen HERE.

Old gas station converted into an ice cream shop in Mount Pleasant Mills.

Dutch Wonderland, an amusement park on U.S. Route 30 east of Lancaster.

The Willow Hill Covered Bridge, next to U.S. Route 30 east of Lancaster in the suburbs. The bridge was built in 1962.

Amish farms near Gap, Pennsylvania.

Back home in Delaware!

Wow! You can pack a lot into one vacation! LOL! This past Monday I was at a pub near Dundas Square, and spent an interesting hour or so chatting with a middle aged couple not too far from your neck of the woods (they are familiar with Dogfish Head beers!). They were visiting Canada for the first time and had all sorts of questions.

On the next page, I will begin to show my pictures from the ariplane trips to and from San Diego. I passed over a lot of interesting places, from cities to small towns, from farmland to desert.
