I find Sydney's skyline more cohesive, more dense, more pleasing in shape, and as a whole, I don't find Melbourne's buildings any nicer.

Besides, when it comes to height, I'm not as impressed by peak height as I am by mean height, in which I feel Sydney is quite competitive.

Melbourne's traditional CBD skyline (the tall, dene cluster around Southbank is blocked by the casino and its hotel tower from this angle)

In an attempt to stop this turning into a Melbourne vs Sydney thing which happen all too often in Australia, here are some pics of Perth and Brisbane's skylines (As far as I'm concerned Brisbane gets the most improved award, Perth on the other hand hasn't really changed in 16 years).

I'm going to have to go with Melbourne on this one. Sydney has a superb location and many beautiful aspects of the skyline but there is so much cluster-**** in the southern CBD area which detracts hugely from the southern skyline. Also, the relatively high spine height detracts from the entire quite large aspect of the entire skyline and gives it an awful shape with a huge spike in the middle (from the south) and I hate Sydney Tower which I don't believe is needed any more and only detracts from everything in the skyline. Melbourne is nicely spread out and the general quality of buildings is far superior to Sydney.

Only minor changes true. But were going gangbusters over the next two-four years and the long term prospects are even better.

Yip, from what ive seen and heard Perth will be unrecognizable in around 5 years. As for fav skyline I think I have to go Gold Coast, it may not have the density but its one beautiful skyline, especially when coupled with the Pacific Ocean. Perth a close second, it seems to have a perfect balance. The thing I love about all the major Australian cities is that they are built along rivers or bodies of water which definitely complement these skylines.
