Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbishan), Guilin, Guangxi
2008.08.25
![]() ![]() Guangxi location in China: ![]() Elephant Trunk Hill is located on the western bank of Li River Scenery. The shape of the hill is just like a huge elephant drinking water from the river with its trunk, so it is called Elephant Trunk Hill. Shui Yue Cave (Water Moon Cave) is between the trunk and the legs, which is a semi-round cave penetrated by water. The inverted reflection of the cave in water plus the part above forms a full moon. This phenomenon is unique and many laudatory inscriptions were found on the wall inside the cave. People can boat through the cave to the river. Another cave regarded as the eyes of the elephant lies in the hillside. It provides tourists an ideal position to enjoy the panoramic view of Guilin. On the top of the hill is a two-storey pagoda built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) surrounded by green trees. The north seat of the second floor is inlaid with an image of Bodhisattva Puxian. The pagoda looks like a precious vase on the back of an elephant seen from distance and many beautiful legends about the pagoda with good wishes are said among people. As the symbol of Guilin, Elephant Trunk Hill is the main scenic spot of the Elephant Trunk Hill Park, which also includes Yunfeng Monastery (a building with ancient style), Aiqing Dao (Love Island) and so on.

Yalong Bay, Sanya, Hainan
2008.08.27
![]() Hainan location in China: ![]() Yalong Bay boasts unparalleled beauty. The 7.5-kilometer (4.7- mile) long, crescent-shaped bay with an area of 18.6 square kilometers (about 7.2 square miles) is one of the famous scenic spots in Hainan Province. With the average temperature a pleasant 25.5 C all year-round, Yalong Bay is situated in the southernmost part of Hainan Province, 25 kilometers (about 15.5 miles) away from the tropical seaside tourist city, Sanya. The scenery is amazing, with endless rolling hills, serene gulfs, clear blue sea and silvery sand beaches--three times as long as any in Hawaii. Home to several well-preserved coral reefs with tropical fish of varied kinds, colors and shapes, the ocean here is crystal clear, allowing visitors to view underwater sights up to 10 meters (33 feet) deep from the surface.

Nihewan National Nature Reserve, Hebei
2008.08.28
![]() Hebei location in China: ![]() The Nihewan Basin in northern China is a major area of archaeological research in East Asia and a prime focus for the search for early hominids. It is located in Hebei Province, about 150 km northwest of the Zhoukoudian village. The Nihewan is a large extinct lacustrine basin with extensive Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits containing hominid activity sites with associated fossil fauna and stone artifacts. These sites are indicative of the earliest hominid occupation in East Asia at 40° north latitude. The newly identified site of Goudi, in the eastern Nihewan Basin, where in situ lithic artifacts and fossil fauna have been found associated in Early Pleistocene sediments, has been dated paleomagnetically to about 1.66 million years (Zhu et al. 2004) and therefore represents the earliest hominid occupation in East Asia.

Henan Provincial Museum, Zhengzhou, Henan
2008.08.30
![]() Henan location in China: ![]() Henan Museum (河南博物院), located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, is a newly-built modern history and art museum. It has a collection of more than 130,000 pieces of cultural relics through the ages. Henan Museum occupies an area of more than 100,000 square meters, with a total floor space of 78,000 square meters. Henan Museum is one of the oldest museums in China. In June, 1927, General Feng Yuxiang, the commander in chief of the National Revolutionary Army and the chairman of Henan Province at that time, proposed that “Education is the Essential Politics for a Country (教育为立国根本要政)” . In July, the founding committee of the Heman Museum was established. The site designated for the museum was the former Legal and Law School, which was located at Kaifeng Court West Street (Sansheng Temple Street, Kaifeng today). Thus, the Museum was born. At present the museum has a collection of more than 130,000 pieces of cultural relics treasures, of which more than 5,000 pieces are treasures of the first and second grades. Among them, the prehistoric cultural relics, bronze vessels of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and pottery and porcelain wares of the various dynasties in Chinese history possess most distinguishing features. Inside the museum, there are basic exhibition halls, specialized exhibition halls and provisional exhibition halls. For the first batch of exhibitions, two basic displays and six specialized displays are offered. They are rich in contents, presenting a spectacular sight to visitors.

Silver Mine Bay, Mui Wo, Lantau Island, Hong Kong
2008.08.31
![]() Hong Kong location in China: ![]() ![]() Mui Wo (梅窩), which means "plum nest", is a rural town on the eastern coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. The main beach in Mui Wo is known as Silver Mine Bay (銀礦灣). The history of Mui Wo is linked to the end of the Southern Song Dynasty in the late 1270s. In 1276 during the Mongol invasion, the Southern Song Dynasty court moved to Fujian, then to Lantau Island and later to today's Kowloon City, but the child emperor, Zhao Bing, after being defeated in the Battle of Yamen, committed suicide by drowning with his officials. Tung Chung valley, named after a hero who gave up his life for the emperor, is believed to have been a base for the court. Hau Wong, an official of the emperor is still worshipped in Hong Kong today. Mui Wo is located on Silvermine Bay, so named for the silver mines that were once worked along the Silver River which flows though the village. The nearby Silvermine Cave was mined for silver during the second half of the 19th century. It has since been sealed off for safety.
