Into the Three Gorges in Yangtze river near Taipingxi, Hubei

2008.01.23

Hubei

The Three Gorges Dam (长江三峡大坝) is a Chinese hydroelectric river dam that spans the Yangtze River in Sandouping, Yichang, Hubei, China. The total electric generating capacity of the dam will reach 22,500 megawatts, at which point it will be the largest hydro-electric power station in the world by capacity. This is the biggest project that has been undertaken in China since the Great Wall and the Grand Canal. Several generators are yet to be installed; the dam is not expected to become fully operational until about 2011.
Although there are potential economic benefits such as flood control and hydroelectric power, there are also concerns about the relocation of over 1,500,000 people who have or will be displaced by the rising waters; siltation that could limit the dam's useful life; loss of numerous valuable archaeological and cultural sites; and significant adverse effects upon other species

Qiantang River Bridge at night, Hangzhou, Zhejiang

2008.01.25

Zhejiang's position in China:

The Qiantang River (钱塘江) also known as the Qian River, is a southeast Chinese river that originates in the borders of Anhui and Jiangxi provinces and passes through Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, before flowing into the East China Sea through Hangzhou Bay.
The river is also the southern terminal of the ancient Grand Canal that links five major rivers in China from north to south, enabling traffic north to Beijing from Hangzhou via the Canal.
The First Qiantang River Bridge in Hangzhou was the first steel bridge to span across a major river in China when it was built in the 1930s.

Yes I think it is biased too.

This is what I don't understand, why people have to mention other country in a thread that is purely dedicated to a specific country.

China has varied landscapes. They are much more interesting than well known photos from Chinese megacites.

Saihanba National Park, in northern Chengde (near the border with Inner Mongolia), Hebei

2008.01.26

Two pics to celebrate it's weekend!

Hebei's position in China:

Hebei (河北) is a northern province of the People's Republic of China and the name Hebei means "north of the (Yellow) River".
Saihanba National Forest Park, located in Chengde, is the largest national forest park with a total area of 1.41 million hectares. Saihanba, 400 km from Beijing, means 'beautiful highland' in Mongolian. This was the hunting field of the Qing Emperors and has stunning scenery in autumn.

China's countryside is so beautiful. I can tell because I've been there several times. It's just a great country with so many friendly and hardworking people. If they can work on the pollution issues in the cities, I think it would look great too. But Beijing itself is a major tourist destination, I would say.

Bamboo forest, Mukeng, Anhui

2008.01.27

I's weekend so 2 pics again, this time the Bamboo Forest in Mukeng

Anhui's position in China:

Bamboo is a group of woody perennial evergreen plants. Some of its members are giants, new shoots of some of the larger species can grow over 1 meter per day. They are of economic and high cultural significance in East Asia and South East Asia where they are used extensively in gardens, as a building material as well as a food source. In Chinese, they are known as zhu (竹).

Bamboo's long life makes it a Chinese symbol of longevity. In Chinese culture, the bamboo, plum blossom, orchid and chrysanthemum are collectively referred to as the Four Noble Ones. These four plants also represent the four seasons and, in Confucian ideology, four aspects of the junzi (君子 "prince" or "noble one"). The bamboo is also admired for their perseverance under harsh conditions.

Maybe you already know the remote village of Mukeng and its surrounding bamboo forest because the bamboo forest fight scene in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was filmed there. Mukeng is a small village of approximately 100 people who live a simple and traditional lifestyle.

Coast of QingDao, Shandong

2008.01.28

Shandong's position in China:

Qingdao (青岛) is a city in eastern Shandong province. Lying across the Shandong Peninsula while looking out to the Yellow Sea, Qingdao today is a major seaport, naval base, and industrial center. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery. The character 青 (qīng) in Chinese means "green" or "lush," while the character 岛 (dǎo) means "island." It was recently named China's 9th-most livable city by China Daily.
By the end of 2002, Qingdao was estimated to be the home of more than 7 million inhabitants, of which around 2.6 million reside in the Qingdao urban area. Another estimated 2.3 million live in other cities under Qingdao's jurisdiction.

Sanmenxia reservoir area, near border of Shanxi, Henan

2008.01.29

Henan's position in China:

Henan (河南) is a province located in the central part of the country. The name Henan means "south of the (Yellow) River"
Northern Henan was the core area of ancient China for at least the first half of Chinese history. The Yellow River passes through northern Henan. It enters from the northwest, via the Sanmenxia Reservoir, a place known by sedimentation problems.
