Great Wall at Tiger Mountain (Hu Shan), Dandong, Liaoning

2009.04.30

This is the steepest section of the wall. It ends at a small museum.

Here, a narrow branch of the Yalu River forms the border between China (left) and the DPRK (right).

Liaoning

Some 25km northeast of Dandong, a portion of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty has been restored and opened for tourists. This is the eastern terminus of the Great Wall. The steep wall winds up a mountain which offers a splendid view of the surrounding countryside, including DPRK's Uiju County on the opposite side of the Yalu river.
At the foot of Tiger Mountain, a narrow branch of the Yalu forms the border between China and North Korea. "One step crossing" (Yibukua) is an extremely narrow part of the river where you could easily cross to the other side were it not for the new metal fence which was recently installed on the DPRK side of the riverbank.
The wall was named for its location at the south foot of the Hushan (Tiger Mountain), in a small village named Hushan in Kuaidian County, Liaoning Province.
Hushan, so named because of its resemblance to a crouching tiger, was of strategic importance in ancient times. It adjoins the roaring Yalu River on the south, faces the Yuchi Island and Yizhou Ancient City in South Korea across the river, and overlooks the Yuan River to the west.
The original wall was heavily damaged by erosion over the centuries. Work has been underway to restore it. The existing wall is around 200 meters long, with three watchtowers.

I checked from Google Earth. It's only a short isolated section? What happened to the other sections?

Senado Square (Largo do Senado), Macau

2009.05.01

Macau

The Senado Square, or Senate Square (Largo do Senado, in Portuguese), is a paved area in the centre of the former Portuguese colony of Macau (now a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China), enclosed by the buildings of the Leal Senado, the General Post Office, and St. Dominic’s Church. The square is paved in the traditional Portuguese pavement. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Macau".
Largo do Senado is Macau’s main square. Old Portuguese charm, colonial building, cobblestoned streets.

Hushan was always regarded as an important fortress because it guarded the safety of Dandong City and is the eastern gate way to China. So logic dictated that a wall along Hushan Mountain be built to take up the commanding heights.
The Hushan Great Wall was built to strengthen the frontier defense in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and was the eastern starting point of the Great Wall. However, due to the collapse of many parts of its structure, people took Shanhaiguan Pass to be the eastern-most point of the Great Wall. The excavation of 600-meters (0.4 miles) of ruins in 1989 proved it to be the real one.

Although the thread title is called - China, one photo every day and you may often enjoy - China, more than one photo every day. I think forumers here like to appreciate more pics rather than one pic one day , so the title is no problem . In addition , China is so vast , it is difficult to express its beauty and greatness in only one pic.

We looked at mountains until dawn, and then when dawn came, it was too pretty for me - there was pink and blue and gold, in the sky, and on icy places, brilliant pink and gold flashes, and the snow was colored too, and I said," Oh," and sighed; and each moment was more beautiful than the one before; and I said, " I love you, Momma." Then I fell asleep in her arms.
That was happiness then.

Jade Emperor Pavilion, Yinchuan, Ningxia

2009.05.02

Ningxia

The Jade Emperor Pavilion (Yuhuang Ge in Chinese) is dedicated to the eponymous deity, who according to Chinese legend is the leader of all the gods. The Jade Emperor is considered the omnipotent ruler of Heaven and Earth as well as the spirit world. The bronze statue of this all powerful Emperor, once worshiped by the faithful, stands in the pavilion.
Situated at the crossroads of Jiefang Road and Yuhuangge Street in Yinchuan City, the pavilion, with its history of more than 600 years, was built originally during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was destroyed by earthquake during the Qing Dynasty in the reign of Qianlong (1711-1799), and was rebuilt later.
The Jade Emperor Pavilion is the main structure within a group of buildings and has a height of about 22 meters (72 feet) and covers an area of about 1040 square meters (1244 square yards). It stands on a rectangular rammed-earth base, through which runs a north-south archway. There are steps providing access to the pavilion on the north-western side.
This is the only remaining traditional wooden structure in Yinchuan and you are sure to be left with a deep impression by the exquisitely designed and constructed winged eaves, curved-canopy roofs, the cloisters and the red-lacquered balustrades. Together with the bell tower and the drum tower, standing respectively to the east and west, the overall complex resembles a flying roc with great majesty and beauty.
The Jade Emperor Pavilion is an embodiment of the consummate skill of the ancient craftsmen of Yinchuan and contributes greatly to the study of the architectural style and materials used during the Ming Dynasty. Considerable attention has been paid to protection work and the pavilion is now open as one of Yinchuan's major tourist attractions.
