The Muslim quarter, Xi'an, Shaanxi

2008.01.30

Shaanxi province's position in China:

Xi'an (西安) is the capital of Shaanxi province. As one of the most important cities in Chinese history, Xi'an is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China for it has been the capital of 13 dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and the Tang. Xi'an is also renowned for being the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and for the location of the Terracotta Army made during the Qin Dynasty. The city has more than 3,100 years of history. It was called Chang'an (長安)in ancient times.
At the end of 2005, Xi'an had a population of 8.07 million. The majority of Xi'an residents are Han Chinese, which make up 99.1% of the city's total population. There are around 81,500 ethnic minorities living in Xi'an, including 50,000 Muslim Hui people, many of them concentrated in the famous Muslim quarter, which is a shopping district well known by tourists who visite Xi’an.
During the Tang dynasty (618-907) many merchants from Persia, Arabia and Central Asia were attracted to China's capital, Chang’an, in search of profit. They brought their religions and fashions with them. As foreign communities grew in size, they introduced their own customs and facilities. Xian's old Muslim quarter now covers a fraction of the area it once did, but it is a strong and thriving area of narrow streets, markets and shops to the north and north-west of the Drum Tower, which is the best access point.
I recommend visiting the Muslim Quarter on your own. The best time to visit is in the afternoon. Take your time to enjoy its small streets and numerous shops where you can find traditional handicrafts.

Yunyan Pagoda (The Huqiu Tower) on Tiger Hill, Suzhou, Jiangsu

2008.01.31

Jiangsu province's position in China:

Yunyan Pagoda, also known as Huqiu Tower, has been named China’s Leaning Tower of Pisa by world architects. Situated outside Changmen, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, it is also known as the Yunyan Temple Tower. The tower was built in the later period of the Five Dynasties (907-960 AD), completed by the second year of the Song Dynasty. The tower rises to a height of 47 m (154 ft). It is a seven-story octangular building built with blue bricks. In more than a thousand years the tower has gradually slanted due to forces of nature. Now the top and bottom of the tower vary by 2.32 meters.
The tower leans because the foundation is originally half rock and the other half is on soil. In 1957, efforts were made to stabilize the tower and prevent further leaning. Concrete was also pumped into the soil forming a stronger foundation. During the reinforcement process, a stone casket containing Buddhist scriptures were found. The container had an inscription noted the completion date of the tower as the seventeenth day of the twelfth month in the second year of the reign of Jianlong (961 AD).
Although it is seven stories, there are no built-in staircases. People climbed to upper stories using movable ladders.

The Ruins of St. Paul's, Macau

2008.02.01

Macau's location in China:

The Ruins of St. Paul's refer to the façade of what was originally the Cathedral of St. Paul, a 17th century Portuguese cathedral in Macau dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. Today, the ruins are one of Macau's most famous landmarks. In 2005, the Ruins of St. Paul were officially enlisted as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau.
Built from 1582 to 1602 by the Jesuits, the cathedral was the largest Catholic church in Asia at the time, and the royalty of Europe vied with each other to bestow upon the cathedral the best gifts. With the decline in importance of Macau, which was overtaken as the main port for the Pearl River Delta by Hong Kong, the cathedral's fortunes similarly ebbed, and it was destroyed by a fire during a typhoon in 1835.

Baiyun Temple, JiaXian, Shaanxi

2008.02.03

Shaanxi's position in China:

On the eighth day of the fourth lunar month each year, a large temple fair is held at the Baiyun Temple (White Cloud Temple). Started in Song Dynasty (960-1279) and completed in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the temple, composed of a group of Taoist edifices covering 8.3 square kilometers, is a well-known spot of interest in western Shaanxi Province.
The original builders seemed to regard the Taoist temple as heaven and intentionally built the Baiyun Temple at a high point, which can only be reached by a steep stone stairway containing with 360 steps.

Hunan's position in China:

That picture was taken by 黄河影人, (well, it's his surname, I don't know his name) and shows an ancient pagoda situated in Heicheng, a city abandoned at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty and discovered in 1886 in Onotir Sair area. There are five pagodas made of original adobe on the 10-meter-high city wall foundations at the northwest corner. The ruins of a pagoda shaped like an overturned bowl still stand at a height of 12 meters. The pagoda can be seen from distance of more than 10 kilometers. It's a paradise for worldwide archeologists.

It has a total length of 32.5 kilometres (20.2 miles) and connects Shanghai and the offshore Yangshan deep-water port in China. Most of the bridge is a low-level viaduct. There are also cable-stayed sections to allow for the passage of large ships, largest with span of 420 m.
