In Trieste until 1981 there was a freight railway ("linea delle rive" or "rivebahn") connecting the railway station with the commercial seaport in the southern part of the city. This line, completed in 1887, used to run in the middle of the street, between pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Since the 1960s, with the mass motorization, this situation became unacceptable, so they started to dig a 5,7km tunnel under the city that was completed in 1981.

Some videoreports of Italian motorways in 1961:

The map at the beginning shows the extension of our network in 1961
It listed the openings scheduled for the following years:
- Milano - Torino: opening in 1962
- Milano - Bergamo: opening in 1962
- Genova - Serravalle: opening date unknown
- Firenze - sea: opening in 1962
- Firenze - Roma: opening partly in 1963 and partly in 1964
- Roma - Capua: opening in 1962

Modern TV reportage about the Autostrada del Sole, including historical videos.

A footage about "highways" around Rome in 1961:
- at the beginning is the SS1 Aurelia towards Civitavecchia (notice the lane discipline )
- at 1:10 starts the "Via del Mare"
- at 1:55 starts the "Via Cristoforo Colombo", that was built as modern expressway
The speaker said: "Traffic problems will be solved when they will build a motorway between Rome and Livorno" And after 52 years...

Interesting, looks like there were not many lights on Belgian motorways in 1971. When did they start with massive illumination?
