Herald
Concern at lack of progress in rival’s plan to develop Ibrox Around two years ago, city rivals Rangers revealed their own Ibrox masterplan. As part of Sir David Murray’s vision, Ibrox Stadium would have its capacity increased to 70,000 and a concert arena would be built along with a hotel, shops and an underground car park. The value attached to the scheme was £350 million. The plans were very much seen as Rangers’ attempt to continue with the momentum they had when proposing a supercasino for the area, as well as a response to the planned improvements around Celtic Park as a result of the Commonwealth Games going to the east end of Glasgow. Ibrox Stadium will also host the Rugby 7s tournament in 2014, serving as an incentive for improvement in the area. Last October Glasgow City Councillors agreed unanimously to give Rangers the option to buy any council-owned land needed for the scheme, which it believed had the potential to regenerate swathes of Govan. But even then, Sir David signalled there would be question marks over the timescale, claiming that there had already been delays “outwith our control”. However, the city council, as part of its backing for the project, had demanded detailed timescales. But, against the backdrop of the financial crisis currently engulfing the Ibrox club, The Herald understands there has been concern that the plans are floundering. It is understood that, after a long silence between the council and Rangers chiefs, talks on the project have only recommenced in recent weeks “to appraise options”. Talks stalled over changes to the proposals and the value of the council’s land, with sources claiming even the most ardent supporters of the plan within Glasgow City Chambers are expressing concern at the rate of progress. A council spokesman said: “Recent talks between the council and Rangers should see an options appraisal commence in the very near future.” Rangers declined to comment.

Dunno why the council is whinging though - there are detailed timescales: I'd apologise, but let's face it - I wouldn't mean it. |

Would-be Rangers owner Andrew Ellis will land the keys to an Ibrox property blueprint if he completes his takeover. Sportsmail can reveal the club have again been in talks with Glasgow City Council about an ambitious 'makeover' for the land around the stadium on the city's south side.

From what I hear, the proposed takeover could be in danger of collapse due to the restrictions on the redevelopment of land around the stadium, which appear integral to the purchase of the club by Andrew Ellis and his backers.
Seemingly, Rangers have an agreement with GCC to buy any land they need surrounding the stadium in order to redevelop it, but there are restrictions to the uses the council will grant permission for. Eg, a large Tesco is supposed to be in the plans, which the council will not back, due to the proximity to the large Govan Asda, and allegedly the council don't want a large scale retail development with Braehead so close. This is information i've read in various press reports and from others who, at least claim to, have credible sources. I can't verify any of this as fact, but I believe it to at least be plausible enough conjecture to post. |

I can understand their concern about it being too close to Govan's Asda, but why would they be concerned about Braehead considering this was given to Renfrewshire Council about 5 years ago?

My main concern would not be proximity to Braehead, but that they should not approve any retail developments that would undermine the regeneration of the existing nearby Govan shopping centre.

Given that there are out of town shopping destinations like Silverburn, Braehead and the Fort reasonably close to Glasgow, I would expect that GCC should be driving investment towards the City Centre, rather than a development a little further out? Personally, i'd like to see a large scale new sports centre replacing the current Ibrox complex, especially given the land now cleared following the clearing of the last of the flats opposite the stadium. That would certainly be a good point to start from. |

I am surprised that the football clubs in Scotland don't venture out into other sports like you see in countries such as Greece. It would be good to see a Celtic or Rangers basket ball team. Also such teams would encourage sports facilities next to Celtic Park and Ibrox to be used by potentially a wider group of people.

Even rugby doesn't have that big a profile at club level, and just look at the failure of the ice hockey team that started in Ayrshire and moved to Braehead, but couldn't sustain enough interest. It would be nice to see more sports take off in Scotland, and increased participation in more sport would, you would hope, benefit the health of the nation. Though the tickets would only end up over priced same as everything else! |

I agree for those that have a car and are willing to travel to these areas, but I think for most that live in Ibrox, they wouldn't venture any further than the city centre for their shopping.

Having the Subway close at hand has to be a boost for this kind of development, surprised it hasn't happened before now at any of the other stations.

True.Quite. They can't get a similar scheme underway at Glasgow Harbour, I don't know why on earth he thinks he could build one on wasteland in Govan, with it's geographical disadvantages for a start.

I'm a Celtic fan, but I'm a Glaswegian first and foremost so I'd love to see the area around Ibrox developed into something attractive. This latest vision, however, has the same hubristic air as the last one, and I think it's more playing to the gallery than serious proposal - much like the Celtic board's annual promises to invest in a world-class stadium precinct.
These announcements always come around season-ticket renewal time, don't they? We might crow about being one of the few cities in the world to have three 50,000+ seater stadiums, but in terms of facilities, surroundings and public transport accessibility, all of them are the poor relations of modern European, US and Australian stadia. Winning the Commonwealth Games gave us a pressing reason to finally address our deficiencies on those fronts, but there hasn't been much movement yet.
