hkskyline:

Great pictures. I feel like that Shanghai's old pre-Communist low-rise buildings have undergone significant urban renewal based on your pictures. Has this been a noticeable/intentional trend in recent years as an alternative to demolition and building souless highrises? I mean your second picture is especially impressive because that building with a sloping roof would've been a slum a decade ago, but now it looks really nice and clean, yet preserves Shanghai's pre-Communist character.

Nevertheless, awesome pictures!

The first part of this set was taken in Hongkou district (where you see the residential street scenes), which has some new redevelopments, but for the most part these old neighborhoods remain quite well intact. I don't think the desire is there to raze everything. There's so much land in Pudong to start from scratch. Even along the Bund they're quite careful in bringing new stuff amidst the historic architecture. Not so sure whether that holds true south of there though. I saw quite a lot of very old, and in much worse conditions, dwellings with large construction sites that have razed whole blocks down.
