If Turkmenistan was more open to tourists at least there would be lots of people walking around and I'd visit, I'll check it out sometime anyway.

They should try to make the city more pedestrian friendly as well.

[TM] Turkmenistan | road infrastructure

Why don't you just relax? It's seems like you kinda obsessed with 'great dear one'.

Very interesting photos, and thanks for posting them. I think not many people outside of Turkmenistan know that much about it - and especially not how it looks. That said - and this is purely my opinion - I do find the photos quite depressing. There are simply no people (nor private vehicles) in the photos, and I cannot believe these streets will suddenly fill and be brimming with life. It all looks as though some child has been playing on a city-building computer game and has pressed 'copy/paste' a few times too many. The architecture is all-too much on the eye - and comes across as rather vulgar and of too specific a taste. I wonder how much public consultation there was in all this? It all reeks of someone trying too hard to impress the outside world that their country (read: personal ego project) is the best there is. Subtlety in splendour in all this architecture would impress more people, I feel, rather than showing-off.
No one likes a show-off.
Still, I am sure that, indeed, Turkmenistan is a 'paradise on Earth'...

3. Do cars cost about the same as in Western Europe, or are they significantly more expensive (import taxes, etc)?
4. What is the percentage of resident foreigners in Turkmenistan?

That is indeed a problem in a highy localised western part of the capital containing perhaps 10 large buildings and 4 large roads of around 30km length in total. But if the architect disagreed with the 'taste' of the venerable estimate leader then he would find himself in some part of Turkmenistans enormous Gulag out in the desert and for a very very long time.

The problem is that the same perhaps 10 large buildings and 4 large roads of around 30km length in total keep serially appearing in this thread from every possible angle.

Having utterly exhausted this 'angles' idea (rather than build new roads) the latest iteration is Bendy Photos. Maybe the proud angular leader is on a bendy mission in December...stranger things have happened, even in this utterly strange thread.

It looks like the whole city is just an outdoor museum with a very few visitors unless everybody is under housing arrest.

The greatest percentage of "foreigners" is a majority Russian population in a Caspian Sea port city now called "Turkmenbashy" ... Guess they miss Soviets in that country!

They built a gigantic amount of marble buildings and other new large buildings in the periphery of southern Ashgabat, not just a couple.

Just look at this:

And demolished all the people's houses from before instead of just building on desert a few metres to the side

Yeah. All these buildings and roads look nice now, but perhaps in the future if there is no business case to maintain them to a high standard they will become run down and decayed. I'm sure all that communist modern architecture in Eastern Europe was actually pretty sharp when it was brand new, but now of course its left to rot as its purpose in a reformed economy changed regardless of its potential usefulness.

Still, infrastructure is never completely wasteful. People will always need roads to drive on. It's good they are building physical things instead of consumables for a small elite. Who knows.

1. Yes, in former Soviet Union exit visa now exists only in Uzbekistan. In Turkmenistan exit visas were abolished from January 2004.
2. No, but 2 years ago abt 200-250 cars per day were registered in Ashgabat, now the number may be higher.
3. I don't follow prices in Europe, you can check prices in Ashgabat here
http://hyundai.tm/downloads/docs/Booklet_6_ru_price.pdf
http://www.cenotavr-tm.com/legkovye-avtomobili
http://www.tmawto.com/search/?turkme...y=Aşgabat
4. I don't know exact number, just heard from fellow turk that there's 25 000 Turkish diaspora in Turkmenistan, also you can find lots of Chinese. Most of Russian-speakers, around 100 000, hold dual Russian citizenship.

PS: and Medicine is not free in Turkmenistan, in fact, it might be quite expensive.

Before posting a nonsence please refer at least to Google earth and count both, buildings and kilometeres.

Again, before posting a nonsence please refer at least to google. It's a residential area on the picture. Olympic village is below

That's true, but you forget to mention that almost all of those demolished slums were built right after the earthquake in 1948, and most of them did not have access to wastewater system, some didn't have access to water and power lines. And most of them were built by dwellers themselves without any seismic safety.
