Thats normal. 99% of the main roads look like this and the surface is highly variable with no national standards evident.

If the main roads were surface maintained properly (most are not) and marked properly ( almost ALL are not) then Turkmenistan would have a very good 1+1 network considering how low salaries are and with that car affordability for ordinary people. It is not a transit country.

The money is spent on Potemkin projects mainly. 4 x 4 in a capital city which has a population under 1m.

The country is enormous for a population like that. Mongolia almost comes to mind. The population is less than the island of Ireland spread across an area the size of Spain!

Roadbuilding costs should be similar to or less than Spain if it was not for all the Baksheesh required to get contracts there.

Did you know that the vast majority of Turkmenbashy's population is Russian? I bet 20 years of The Father, his ghost and The Great Scifi-fan Successor will lead to a claim for Russian help from the citizens, and not a fake one.

About the population/space-question: Finland has 337,000 Km2 and just under 5,5 millions of inhabitants, yet plenty of new motorways and the expansion of existing ones are needed. It's a question of how poor the country is = car ownership. Look at Iceland, with horrible traffic problems in a mostly-glaciar remote island with a capital city of 130,000 inhabitants.

But modertkmn, answer me, why this stupid Turkmenbasy cult is still going on? Is the naming of the most Russian city in the county after this crazy lunatic some kind of childish humiliation of the Russian majority in the city?

Turkmenbashi from Turkmen language is "Beginning of Turkmens", is the western "gate of the country", why it should be called in Russian?

I thought Turkmenbashy is "Leader of all Turkmens" aka Saparmurat Nijazov and the Ruhnama and month name-stuff. And of course because it has a Russian majority.

Ashgabat is built so quickly that it is not time to apply markings on road shields.

This explains a lot, not more questions Bet he was good friend with Ali Khamenei and Kim Jong Il.
