New Orbital Highway & Truck Route, Doha

Ashghal Signs Three Design and Construction Contracts for Expressways Projects exceeding QR 12.6 billion

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has awarded three contracts for projects under the Expressway programme, with a total value exceeding QR 12.6 billion.

Two contracts were signed for the design and construction of the New Orbital Highway and Truck route including a contract for phase 2 of the project stretching from Salwa Road to North Relief Road encompassing 41 km of new dual carriageway, and a contract for phase 3 of the project stretching from Mesaieed to Salwa Road encompassing 57 km of new dual carriageway. Third contract was signed for the design and construction of the Al Wakrah Bypass Road encompassing approximately 11 km of new dual carriageway.

Among the unique features of the project’s design is segregating heavy good vehicles from general traffic by dedicating 2 separated truck lanes in each direction to improve safety by removing slower moving trucks from the flow of faster vehicles.

The project will include five lanes and two separated truck lanes in each direction with the provision of two future lanes.
Press release: http://www.ashghal.gov.qa/en/MediaHu...6-billion.aspx

Could this be the first time a 14-lane greenfield motorway is constructed? With space for 18 lanes? 12.6 billion QR = $ 3.5 billion.

Dukhan Highway

Ashghal Announces Opening of 9 Kilometres of the New Dukhan Highway Central

Traffic between Dukhan and Central Doha will experience major improvement as the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ opened, on Saturday 12th of July 2014, the Dukhan Highway Central from Sheehaniya Interchange to Al Rayyan Stadium Roundabout.

Dukhan Highway is considered one of the most important sections of the road network in Qatar. It serves the local community as well as the adjacent areas, especially those who work in Dukhan and Al Shamal areas.

The Dukhan Highway Central provides a modern highway that improves the traffic flow between Doha and west of Qatar through nine kilometers of dual-carriageway with four lanes in each direction. It stretches from Sheehaniya Interchange to Al Rayyan Stadium Roundabout, and provides local access to the community through two-lane service road. The Dukhan Highway Central replaces the old Dukhan Highway which consisted of two lanes in each direction; this resulted in traffic congestions and accidents.

To increase the safety of road users, the driving speed has been limited to 120 km per hour.

Opening of Al Huwailah Road Completely for Traffic Flow

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has announced the opening of Al Huwailah Link Road leading to Ras Laffan city. The road was opened to traffic on 27 October, 2014. Currently some complementary works are being done on the sides of the road that do not affect the traffic flow.

Al Huwailah Link Road was developed from single carriageway with one lane in each direction without any separation, into a dual carriageway that includes mainly four lanes in each direction, separated by a median. In addition, street lighting has been provided and traffic signals have been installed with cameras to monitor traffic violations on the four new intersections, to improve traffic safety.

The road comprises 16 km, and is linked to the North Road at Al Huwailah intersection (intersection 66), and represents an essential part of the future expansion plan for Ras Laffan Industrial City and its environs.
Press release: http://www.ashghal.gov.qa/en/MediaHu...ffic-flow.aspx

It's not a full motorway though. 2x4 lanes with traffic lights.

There is a lot of space and unused land in the GCC..........so imho there is very little congestion and crowding there

All the roads & cities in the Netherlands used to be empty grass land or water.
99% of the surface of Qatar happens to be sand.
In that sense i don't see the difference between building if in the desert or in an empty grassland if the population is growing or new developments are planned.

I found a drone photo of the 4-level stack interchange south of Doha. It will connect the Al Wakrah Bypass and the East-West Corridor Expressway. It is planned for completion in Q2 2017.

It is labeled 09 on this map:

The New Orbital Highway and Truck Route is a 14 lane expressway under construction that will form a western bypass of Doha. It absorbes some of the 'Temporary Truck Route' that was built 2 years ago. It will have separate roadways for trucks and other traffic.

It consists of 4 contracts, 143 kilometers of new expressway. The full build-out plan involves 180 kilometers, a northern extension to Ras Laffan is planned later.

I noticed a set of unusually long buildings along Industrial Area Road in Doha. I'm not sure what they are, but the longest is 2.2 kilometers long, it could be the world's longest apartment building.

Progress on the new stack interchange southeast of Doha. It's part of a whole grid of new freeways on the south and west side of Doha.

The satellite image is from 17 December 2016.

The Al Rayyan Road upgrade opened to traffic on 18 March. It is a 2.9 kilometer segment of expressway with eight lanes. I think it is part of Highway 3 / Dukhan Highway. It is built below grade for most of its length.

In green on this map:
