G-Ring Road

New March 2017 shows a part of the G-Ring Road of Doha almost completed. It opened to traffic on 22 April.

This part has 6+7 lanes and space for much more

I wonder if those ultra-wide motorways are really needed or if they are just for show-off to the rest of the world, like 500m+ skyscrapers and other megaprojects in Gulf countries.

For me its a combination of several factors.

First they show the world what they can do, yes.
Second they also show their own population that they are potent in every way (like the Caesars did)
Third some might really try to develop their countries. But i guess this would be better possible with a widespread program. Autocrats tend to big singular projects.
Fourth, there is acess to much money most of the time, that leads to stupid ideas.

More lanes and ramps opened on the Dukhan Highway west of Doha.

There is hardly need for such streets in a city of less than 0.5 million mature citizens.

Construction cost though is probably very low. The terrain is more or less flat and the land essentially free (undeveloped scrub probably owned by the emir anyway)

Al Wakrah Bypass

The 11 kilometer long Al Wakrah Bypass opened to traffic today. It is a 6-10 lane freeway south of Doha, that links up with the southern ring roads. It opened only in the direction of Doha for now.

Orbital Highway

Three sections of the Orbital Highway opened to traffic today. They opened 10 lanes of the future 14 lanes around Doha.

* Mesaieed - G Ring Road (18 km)
* Dukhan Highway - Al Khor (33 km)
* Dukhan Highway - Lusail (18 km) (this is a spur route)

The sections in green opened to traffic today. The blue middle section opened in April, so it is possible to entirely bypass Doha now.

What a luxury - and separate carriageways for trucks U/C. I wish Hungarian M1 looked this.

Wonder how exits from the main carriageways look with the truck roads next to them? Would exiting light vehicles have to merge onto the truck lanes?

Al Wakrah Bypass

The Al Wakrah Bypass fully opened to traffic today. It opened on 5 July to northbound traffic, it is now also open to southbound traffic.

The interchange with G-Ring Road:

G-Ring Road

The G-Ring Road / 7th Ring Road / East-West Expressway on the south side of Doha opened to traffic on 22 April 2017.

It is a huge highway, with 12 lanes, a wide median and every single exit is a gigantic free-flow interchange.
