Manila's Chinatown, Binondo

The Binondo district in Manila is one of the oldest in the city, and is home to the original Chinese merchant community. It's located directly north of Intramuros, across from the Pasig river.

The journey starts at the Binondo Cathedral. From there, we went down Ongpin st., wandering down side streets and past a few of the many canals that criss-cross the district.

Thanks for looking!

depends... I find it rather rugged and decayed... but maybe it's just the material of the facade.

Interesting.

Apparently, she doesn't like this photo though. Did she say something to you?

^Interesting that you noticed this. The customer (on the phone) was pointing at something on the wall; it was this gesture I was trying to capture. The old woman was facing the register, but then turned around the moment the shot was taken. She didn't say anything though, she just went back to work.

I have never been home yet since 1996.

Downtown Binondo and Chinatown is the place where all the illigal aliens from nearby taiwan and china are hiding, doin all the illigal stuff.

Still, the place and its surrounding have nothing much difference since then based on several internet sites including here. The hanging wires/cables are still visible and never been burried. And the nearby slum areas have been neglected by the government that's being run by chinese-filipino oligarchs.

However, there are several developments there in terms of infrastructures, tourism, and overall economy but in a very slow pace of 4.5% growth in 2011. 2010 was even a higher percentage growth around 7.2%. Economy have slowed down ever since the oligarchs have continued to run the politics.
