Church of the day (17/06) is from Tallinn

Toomkirik (Dome church, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin in Tallinn)

This church is the oldest in the city, being first established by Danes in the 13th century, around 1219. It went from a wooden to a stone church already in 1229 when the Dominican monks arrived. The monks did never really finish the building and it wasn't until the 14th century that the church started to come to its own. The exterior dates from the 15th century while the spire dates from the 18th century. A fire in 1684 damaged the building severely but it was soon rebuilt much as it had been before.

By the way: you may notice that there is a lack of Latvian churches on this thread. I found a bunch of Lithuanian churches on a previous thread about churches and some Finnish and Estonian ones as well, on Latvia, however, I haven't found much, so we need some help from Latvia. I call on all Latvians to contribute here, show us your stuff.

Church of the day (24/06), or church of the week rather..

Viborg domkirke

Also known as 'Vor Frue Domkirke' (Cathedral of our Lady), this is of one of Denmark's most important historic churches. It is located in the town of Viborg in northern Jutland. The modern building is a 19th century construction based loosely on Lund Cathedral and has little to do with the original medieval cathedral from 1130.

Church of the Day (25/10) is from Norway

Kongsberg kirke (Kongsberg Church)

Kongsberg Church is a baroque church consecrated in 1761. It is noticeably different in its interior than its exterior, the former being lavish, the latter austere. The original architect died while the church was still under construction, and his sucessor obviously had a far more rococco taste. The original Kongsberg Church had fallen into decay, hence the need to build a new one.

Kongsberg is a mining town located ca. 80 km west of Oslo. If you know where Drammen is, it's in that direction. Though the original economical resource was silver, the town is today known for its marine- and weapon technology companies.

Mariestad Cathedral. Built between 1593 and 1604. Mariestad is one of two Swedish cities with a cathedral whitout a bishop's seat, the other being Kalmar.

The church is built on a hill so it dominates the city and can be seen from far away. The tower is about 80 meters high.

Church of the Day (31/10): Habo Church, Habo Parish, Jönköping District, Sweden.

Habo Church received its present appearance in 1723. What is unique about this church is its architecture, which in appearance reminds one of a cathedral, but is built entirely in wood. It is in the form of a basilica, with a high nave and two lower side aisles.

Church of the Day (1/11): Østerlars Kirke, Bornholm, Denmark

Østerlars Kirke is the largest of the four round churches of Bornholm that are so typical of the island. It is thought to have been constructed around 1150. Characteristic of the round churches of Bornholm is that they have only one central pillar that carries the roof which is of wood.

A round church is a special type of church construction, having a completely circular plan. Round churches are often found in Denmark (notably the island Bornholm) or Sweden and were popular church constructions in Scandinavia in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Østerlars Kirke is part of the architecture canon made by the Danish Minestry of Culture

Church of the Day (2/11): Urnes stavkirke, near Lustrafjorden, Norway

After a white and round church, we should have a black and triangularone...

Urnes stavkirke is yet another magnificent Norwegian stave church and it is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was build around 1130 (though expanded in the 17th century) and providea link between Christian architecture and the architecture and artforms of the Viking Age with typical animal-ornamentation, the so called "Urnes-style" of animal-art.

Interesting with stavkyrkor, I thought they were typicall norwegian but they apparently existed in the whole of northern Europe and England, which I had no knowing off, untill I read about a find of a stavkyrka from around 1000AD or rather the remains of it in Närke.

Tampere/Tammerfors Cathedral

The cathedral is by famous Finnish architect Lars Sonck (1870-1956). Sonck has designed various buildings around Finland such as the Kallio cathedral and also assisted in the building of the Sthlm town hall.

"Det finns en anekdot att han på en konferens träffade Ragnar Östberg och de råkade diskutera Stockholms stadshus. De gjorde tillsammans några skisser på en cigarrettask, och reste hem var till sitt. Känner man Soncks stil, tycker man sig tydligt se en influens där."

Church of the Day (4/11): Frederiksborg Palace Church, Hillerød, Denmark

image hosted on flickr

On a day where America is going to elect a new president, let's have a crowning church...

Frederiksborg Palace Church was constructed in 1606-17 by Christian IV and makes up the western wing of Frederiksborg Palace. It was ment only to be a church for the royal family but when a storm destroyed the normal wooden church in Hillerød, it came into use as a regular parish church for the inhabitants and is still in active use as such.

After Christian IV's death in 1648 and the institution of absolute monarchy in 1660, the palace was used mainly for ceremonial events, primarily the anointing and crowning of the Absolute Monarchs in the palace church. Since 1693 the church has also been used as Knight's Chapel for the Order of the Elephant and the Order of the Dannebrog. It is also still used for some events like baptisms in the royal family.
