A total of 32 venues are proposed.

Three permanent venues will be required if the proposed Aquatic Centre is based as Newlands. Only Two permanent venues will be required if this venue is relocated to a site to allow for a Olympic/World Championship capacity expansion.

Notes:

1. Renovations planned for the Good Hope Centre will determine its final capacity. Currently its maximum seating capacity is 6,000.

2. Newlands Olympic Arena(s) refers to Newlands Rugby Stadium. A proposal exists which allows a temporary roof cover to be installed, temporarily transforming the venue into an indoor space. Along with temporary seating, two indoors arenas can be created significantly reducing the cost of providing two 15,000 seat indoor venues elsewhere.

3. This venue was designed to accommodate an expansion of up to 10,000 seats. The timber side walls will allow for a temporary expansion from 2,000 to 6,000 seats.

4. The Olympic Velocentre refers to the Bellville Velodrome and Bellville Athletics Stadium which are connected.

5. The Table Mountain Mountain Bike Circuit is used during the Absa Cape Epic competition and consists of a 19km mountain bike route. For the Games, a 6km route is required.

6. The Newlands Olympic Waterpolo centre refers to the Newlands Aquatic Centre proposed by Swimming South Africa. Since the site cannot accommodate large events it cannot act as the main Aquatic Centre. If the Newlands site is not approved and replaced with a larger site, the aquatic centre would thenl replace the additional aquatic centre proposed above.

7. Cape Town Arena refers to the Grand West Arena.

8. Newlands Olympic Archery Centre refers to Newlands Cricket Stadium. The London 2012 Archery competition will be staged as Lords Cricket Ground.

9. The "Olympic Green" refers to the cluster of venues at the Green Point Urban Park.

10. The Berg River is to be renamed after the 17th century Khoi leader
Autshumato. The extent of the permanent works required depends on Olympic Rowing Course and Tourism hub currently planned by CnDV and TCTA.

11.
The Green Point Tennis centre will be developed using private funds (sale of Rondebosch site) by WP tennis. Extensive use will be made of existing courts refurbished during 2009/2010. This venue will undergo its own planning and environmental approval process.

12. Atlantis Olympic Shooting Centre currently refers to the existing WP Shooting Union facility, the largest shooting range in the Western Cape. The venue has environmental approval to accommodate expansions.

13. Camps Bay Beach has previously hosted FIVB events.

Woman’s Championships set for Cape

Posted: 2009-08-19 09:49
Sasol League National Championships set to dazzle in Western Cape.
In a fitting conclusion to South Africa’s Women’s Month celebrations, nine of the country’s top women’s soccer teams will face each other in a football fiesta, for the honour of being crowned the Sasol League National Champions.

This will be at Erica Park in Belhar, Cape Town, from the August 24-29.

The country’s nine women’s teams, which promise to deliver scintillating action during the week-long tournament are, Coastal United (Eastern Cape), Bloemfontein Celtic (Free State), Palace Super Falcon (Gauteng), Durban Ladies (KwaZulu Natal), Ma-Indies (Limpopo), Detroit FC (Mpumalanga), Titans Ladies (North West), Crusaders (Northern Cape) and Santos (Western Cape).

The event will be contested between these nine provincial champions, who have just completed a compelling and highly entertaining league program, which was popularised by the successful Sasol road-shows held around the country.

An action packed week will see daily fixtures played in the group stages, before the battle for league honours takes place in the final match on Saturday, August 29, kicking off at 15h00.

During each of the matches throughout the week-long tournament, one player per match will be honoured with an award and phrase that has become synonymous with the Sasol League, namely the “Diski Queen of the Match” award.

Players who make a serious impression during the championship week stand in line to walk away with the highly sought after tournament awards which includes:

Top Goalscorer
Goalkeeper of the Tournament
Promising Young Player of the Tournament
Player of the Tournament

A Referee of the Tournament award will also be presented to the best match official of the tournament.

But even more exciting for the queens of the beautiful game, is the R30 000 prize money each provincial finalist will receive this year.

“The sponsorship of the Sasol League allows us to make a contribution to the upliftment and empowerment of women in South Africa – the backbone of many communities across our country.

“Our sponsorship is a proud endorsement of our endeavours to make a meaningful contribution to the development of women’s football in South Africa and is in line with the Sasol theme for all our sports sponsorships: “Making greater South Africans,” said Sasol Group Sponsorship Manager, Andriesa Singleton.

Sailing

Lipton Cup sails into Cape Town

The Eden Island Lipton Cup sails into Table Bay from August 21 to 28 at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), with the historic 101-year-old trophy still attracting the best sailors from all over the country.

Co-skippers Greg Davis and Gareth Blankenberg won the trophy for three consecutive years, but Davis has now decided to join the host club for the 2009 event.

Team Shosholoza skipper Mark Sadler, was the main challenger in 2008 but a slow start saw his team finish a close second.

Many expect Sadler and Davis to be the main threats again, but with no discards allowed in the event, one bad result can completely change the outcome.

'It is the kind of race where you don't need to be a hero'"It's a tough race. It is the kind of race where you don't need to be a hero and you just need to try and be conservative," said Davis, a six-time winner of the prestigious event.

Sadler is also upbeat ahead of the start and is confident he will overtake Davis to take the trophy to the Royal Natal Yacht Club.

"Lipton is special, it's not a national championship, there is only one place to go for and that is to win," said Sadler.

Racing starts at 12 noon on Sunday, August 23 with a course of no less then 12 nautical miles being run daily until the race concludes on Friday August 28.

29 teams representing clubs from around South Africa including two International entries, Walvis Bay and Maputo will be participating in this year's Eden Island Lipton Cup. - Sapa

guess who might be riding in the world's largest timed mountain bike race...anybody for mountain biking at Table Mountain?

Cycling (Mountain Bike)

Lance Armstrong to ride the 2010 Cape Epic

Having already had our fair share of 'celebrity endorsement' doubt for this morning - we do however think that the news of Lance Armstrong and his new Radioshack team riding next year's Cape Epic is going to explode the numbers of entries for next year's race.
According to America media reports:
Lance is also looking to do some more mountain bike races including the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa. "He really loves it [MTB racing] and RadioShack is very supportive of him doing things outside like that," said Stapleton. [more]
We really can't see Lance slumming it in a pokey tent drinking Klippies and Coke after a hard day's trail riding 'op die berg', but if you relish the thought of riding in the exhaust tracks of the 'great one' then by all means - go ahead.
It's almost guaranteed however that he'll be airlifted outta there and will spend his evenings being massaged by Minki v/d Westhuizen and drinking Pierre Jordaan Brut with Kaka and David Beckham at the One and Only.

They are very minor projects with very little funds allocated, so most likely only for minor upgrades to existing venues.

City's Parow North Swimming Pool Closed for Upgrading

28 September 2009

SOURCE: City of Cape Town
The City of Cape Town's Parow North swimming pool, which was built in 1948, is to remain closed until June next year for a major refurbishing programme costing R1.75 million.Alexander Dykes, Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department's District Manager for the area, says that after 61 years of use, the maintenance and repair costs could not longer be justified and only an extensive re-design and re-build would now suffice.
In the past few years we have had to constantly replace burst pipes and repair defective pumps. This will ultimately compromise public safety and ad hoc repairs can no longer be justified.
Funding has been sourced which will enable a major upgrade to be completed within the current financial year.
It will include:
  • Redesigning of the main pool and diving platform
  • Reconfiguring the main entrance to the pool and other access points
  • Installing a new plant filtration system and chlorinator room
Unfortunately the pool has to be completely dry for the work to be fully effective and to guarantee long-term durability and this has prevented work starting on the upgrade during winter.
Construction will start in January next year and the contractor is obliged to complete the contract by June.
As alternatives, there are three municipal pools within seven kms from Parow North: Goodwood - Milton Road; Parow Valley - Duncan Street and Ruyterwacht - Jan van Riebeeck Street.
"The City apologises for any inconvenience that might result, but I'm convinced that once the upgraded pool is re-opened for use, those who have used the pool in the past will agree that the wait has been worthwhile," Dykes said.

No clue, but I find it interesting how, at least from my experience, hockey is growing in a huge way at school level, but is still so unsuported elsewhere.

So true. It's very popular at schools, but otherwise you don't hear much about it at all.

Cape Town hosts Olympic and World Equestrian Games qualifier

World renowned international course designer Frank Rothenberger, with
associate Andreas Holmann, will be jetting their way to Cape Town to
display their talents at the FEI Cape Town World Cup qualifier. This
last and most prestigious leg of the South African League of the World
Cup Show Jumping Championship is also an Olympic and World Equestrian
Games qualifier taking place from Thursday 19 November to Sunday 22
November at Glenellen Farm in Hout Bay

Rothenberger, who has
designed courses for the most prestigious show jumping events in the
world including Olympic Games courses since 1988 as well as several
World Cup finals is well known for his innovative style and is co-owner
of CARO Parcours Design. Knowledgeable, creative and inspirational
these courses have placed Rothenberger and his business partner
Giancarlo Cardinali, as the current market leaders, specializing in the
design and production of jumps for the equestrian sport. The design of
sponsor jumps that offer maximum brand recognition is one of
Rothenberger's greatest strengths.
Rothenberger's create spectacular
and technically demanding courses which demand precision and accuracy
form riders and obedience and courage from their horses. This is the
catalyst for the Western Province to be part of the world arena and
creates the opportunity for local riders to improve their skills to
international level by jumping courses of this complexity. With all the
top horses and riders traveling to the Cape to compete in this event
the skills of Rothenberger will certainly add to the prestige and
excitement of the event for competitors and visitors alike.
Organised
by veteran show jumper and doyenne of the equestrian industry, Western
Province show jumper, Judy Louw this is the only international show
jumping competition in Cape Town and is an event that pulls visitors
and competitors nationally to the Mother City creating a positive
impact on our economy.

The local community of Imizamo Yethu
residents benefit from employment by working both before and during the
four day event. In addition funds raised will be going to the heart
organization, which brings about social transformation by creating
sustainable social enterprises. With these funds Food Tents* will be
set up for the community.

Featuring the cream of local and
national riders at junior and adult level the calibre of the
competition attracts spectators from all walks of life dispelling much
of the elitism perception of this sport. Free entry makes this an
attractive proposition for a leisure weekend with the added attractions
of a retail village, VIP hospitality, a riders tent with food sponsored
by Woolworths, food stalls with a diversity of cuisine, entertainment
and a children’s corner as well as the spectacular show jumping.

Details: Thursday November 19 to Sunday November 22 (finals)
Times: 9am to 5pm
For further information contact: Judy Louw on 082 449 1458 or Derek Patrick 083 275 5284

So as you know, the roof literally flew off the Hartleyvale stadium quite a while back, for the Champions Challenge they've put up these temporary tents over the grand stand, which is not too bad, but still slightly embarrassing.

I think it looks funky
