why so many night shots? Don't dare to show your city in the daylight?

LOL. it is when I've time. When I walk my dog for instance. took some today too at night. And I like night shots, but the city in the shots look more peaceful than it really is.

There's nothing to be ashamed in Povoa, by the contrary. I even try to show some chaos! Which is not hard to find, but also piecefulness is also not hard, that's Povoa.

it's far from being 'chaotic'. If I was going to Portugal I'd give your city a try

The city has some chaotic elements (that's a loooong story) and very diverse for it's size, but yes, in Portugal it is considered a top 10 city to live.

that's because it is now winter pictures are from DECEMBER 2007 and January 2008.

The summer is yet to come. That picture was also taken in mid-December, like most pics, winter days are usually mild. And temps in winter averages 15ºC, so you can sometimes go to the beach, but often only surfers, bodyboarders and couples (dating) do that. Beach sex is rather popular. LOL

Summers are hot and sunny (high temps in the summer are often around 30ºC), and sometimes lovely refreshing foggy evenings with a sea breeze.

weather is very... very similar to that of California.

Nice pics

Would you consider it to be somewhat a Porto suburb?

Not at all.

But it is of course related and that relation is increasing:
*Politically bound in Greater Porto.
*Same Metro system
*Highways
*People from Porto moving in
*Some companies already see it as part of Porto, so now we even get ads directed to the people of Porto.

But truly:
*27 km away from central Porto.
*There's no "Porto identity" in Povoa like you find in the municipalities around Porto. Local identity is very strong.
*Most people moving in, are not from Porto, but places like Guimarães, Famalicão, Barcelos, etc. Less important, also Braga.
*We also get ads directed to the people of Guimarães, Famalicão, etc.
*Povoa has it's own cultural, demographic and commuter region (Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Esposende)
*Povoa has its own night-life, that is no inferior to Porto's. And unlike Porto is it concentrated in a district and it's out in the streets, while Porto is closed indoors. You can see a difference in behaviour.
*Povoa is having a great development and re-development, while Porto is not.
*visit Porto during sunny summer weekends and visit Povoa, after that.

moreover it doesn't fall in the suburb definition:
*It is an urban area before cars even existed.
*Commuting between both areas is increasing but still negligible and mostly limited to college students (like I was). And commuting can happen both ways.
*Central Povoa has more than 5000 people per sq km.

Some people say that both urban areas will merge sometime soon, but (the remaning) farmland in between is protected by law. Even so, Porto metro says that the rural area along the metro canal that links Póvoa and Porto is having a significant property boom, so in the future I can't tell...

and the word "Greater Porto" or better "Grande Porto" is gaining weight, and Povoa is "Grande Porto".
