Hong Kong 2008 Photo Series #3 - Harbour to Harbour

Hong Kong's weather has varied quite drastically since the new year. We started off 2008 with a cold spell, with temperatures falling to about 10C at night, which doesn't feel so cold after living so many years in North America, but HK at 10C is certainly not a balmy day. The buildings here aren't insulated and do not have central heating, so 10C being next to the ocean breeze is quite a chilly day.

Friday came and it was extremely foggy, so foggy ferries collided in the nearby waters, and made headlines that night. Saturday came and it cleared up very nicely, much to my surprise, and temperatures reached a hot 25C once again.

1. The harbour to harbour tour begins on the Kowloon side, where the Hanoi Road redevelopment project is pretty much complete. They should be finishing up the interiors now.

3. Above the Tsim Sha Tsui East railway station sits a suspended park, with trees, playgrounds, and even some fountains.

8. Obviously the view wouldn't be bad from here either.

11. To connect with the waterfront promenade, this bridge was built across a busy street below.

13. Welcome to a sunny Hong Kong winter day.

16. Some remnants of the fog still lingered near the ground though.

21. I'm not a big fan of the new sculptures and Bruce Lee appearing along the waterfront, but the tourists seemed to like them.

24. Chinese New Year is around the corner again, and the lanterns are already up. They're selling New Year foods and advertising on TV. Where will I go for this extra long weekend?

27. ICC is rising quite nicely.

29. Now off to the Hong Kong Island side by Star Ferry.

31. Visibility is quite good, with Stonecutters Bridge under construction being clearly visible. Part of the highway that will connect to this new bridge from the New Territories will open in March.

41. Kowloon's skyline is rising, but still much smaller than the Hong Kong Island side.

42. I decided to take a different ferry for the return trip back to Kowloon. There are a number of ferry services besides Star Ferry that plough through the harbour. I chose the North Point - Hung Hom route for some sunset views of the skyline.

58. The lights are turning on!

More photos on my website. I've added more from the day's photo-taking adventures to a few new sections.

Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower
Tsim Sha Tsui

The clock tower was completed and came into operation in 1921 as a part of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) Terminus. The terminus was moved to Hung Hom in 1975 and now only the clock tower remains to mark the site of the original railway terminus.

Yes, right after the New Year the clear skies went away and clouds have been lingering since for most of 2008 so far.
