Your preferred location of a skyscraper city?

Cities are located in many different kinds of areas in the world. Its location affects the kind of views you have and how the cities blend in with the natural surroundings..

so whats your favorite?

Coastal: Shanghai, San Diego, Rio, Sochi, Kobe, Yokohama, etc
Valley (generally flat but surrounded by mountains): Nara, Nagano, etc
Inland plains (far from the coast or mountains): Astana, Indianapolis, Ulan Batar etc
Mountainous: Yunyang city (chongqing), Bishkek, etc
Island cities: Singapore, Honolulu, etc
plateau: Lhasa

I wanted to add in a Desert, Taiga, etc city, but I think I should leave out climate related stuff out of a geographical question.

Coastal and flat, but with hills and mountains in the distance.

Being in a valley works too.

My city, Hartford, is in a broad valley with hills in the west and east. I think that it suits the city well because that gives it great vantage points. We are talking about aesthetic concerns, or course.

It has to be coastal but not right at the coastal front. I like how Manhattan and SF are positioned. They are at the coast but are still inlay if you get what I mean

interesting answers guys!

I prefer mountainous myself, but preferably near the coast..
I like cities like Kobe as you can see the ocean/sea, and right next to you is a mountain not too far away.. like say Los Angeles where you can definitely see the mountains, but takes some time to get there..

HK is the perfect example of that You have the mountains and the coast, plus supertalls as well.

I voted for valley but I prefer inland plain & coastal location with some rivers pouring in the sea. Basically I like areas where city has enough space to expand out of its limits.

I like coastal, especially cities that are on a delta or peninsula, like Vancouver or San Fransisco. Mountains are also nice.

Coastal. Either an ocean or a lake or river is nice.

I like both coastal and valley, both is best, but seperately is good as well. Good examples of this combo would be Vancouver and Los Angeles. I've always loved cities in valleys; there's something so snug about them. I like being able to go to an elevation and see the whole urban expanse.

Rugged erosional coast and mountains combined.

I also like cities in deltas or with wide rivers.

wow votes for coastal are quite overwhelming.

any reason? is it primarily practicality or aesthetics?

waterfront views are breathtaking. Other than coastal, I also like the LA style as well.

Hong Kong's hilly backdrops are very evident from Kowloon, not so much the view from Hong Kong Island :

Of course it should be coastal. And it is even better when there are mountains in the background. Beirut is a good example:

(note: those mountains on the left are covered with snow during winter, and there are a lot of new highrises that are going to be built in that area)
