I thought i'd start a new thread on cairns central since there is heaps of gossip with westfield and lend lease fighting of full ownership of the centre and that kmart, david jones and another level are moving in for 3 levels?

yeah i work at kmart westcourt which has shut but i'm still there. i no the bilo manager so he keeps me up to date. well kmart had plans to move on to the upper floor carpark next to myer but now we have been approved to be at mt sheridan next to barnard drive but we are still planning on opening up a kmart in that spot. bilo is still staying as long as they know of at the moment but it sounds like it hangs on this court case. because myer sold it's share of cairns central lend lease and westfield now own 50/50 westfield is trying to make the centre a place with more franchise shops as well. but westfield is trying to buy the whole shopping centre so it will become a westfield the first outside of brisbane in queensland!

but david jones i heard want to move into where bilo and coles are and put coles on another level above it and maybe kmart somewhere else. but with all that glass up on the roof and the lack of parking in the centre and the cbd so i don't no maybe go over the other side of bunda street or underground lol

yeah it should be good. cairns central is making it's own shopping district to it looks like there are a lot of towers popping up around it. cairns is starting to get that canyon effect in some places to.

There is actually a Westfield at Helensvale on the Gold Coast already. Sorry but Cairns Central won't be the first Westfield outside of Brisbane.

Helensvale would still be considered apart of Metropolitan Brisbane.....to be technically correct why not say the first outside of South East Queensland?

No way is Helensvale considered part of Metropolitan Brisbane, it's clearly within the realms of the Gold Coast City Council.

Well i would agree and say the first outside of SE QLD, but not the first outside of Brisbane, cause theres both Helensvale and Sunshine Plaze recently became a westfield shopping centre.

Thanks Red Nut and Gertzy, didn't think my school geography lessons had been a complete waste of time. There's also a Westfield at North Lakes so technically that's in Pine Rivers Shire and NOT Brisbane. I'm guessing that would make Cairns Central about number 4 down the list of Westfield shopping centres outside of Brisbane then. Oh well.

but then again, Pine Rivers, redcliffe and afaik Cabooluture are considered as Metropolitan Brisbane. But as we said, consider it first outside SE Qld.

I know, it was just that the original statement made at the start of the thread was that Cairns Central may become a Westfield, the first outside of Brisbane in Qld. It would just be better if people got the facts right, that's all.

well am i right in saying the North Queensland Cowboys are based in and play all of thier home games at Thuringowa not Townsville? after all thier home ground and management is in "the realms of Thuringowa City"

mhm same thing applies, Urban Townsville and Urban Thuringowa are basically the same entity, so Thuringowa is usually considered as part of Urban Townsville by someone outside of the Twin cities, but anyway, come march, that will be all but settled.

wow ok my mistake but u get the drift because all the westfields are located in the brisbane, sunshine coast and gold coast area, the south east queensland area.

Still i hope this westfield gets built!

In a separate transaction, Westfield has acquired a 50% interest in Cairns Central shopping centre in far north Queensland. The share was acquired from Coles Myer Limited for A$160 million before acquisition costs. Westfield will now jointly own the property with Australian Prime Property Fund (APPF), extending the partnership with APPF to three joint ventures in the Group’s portfolio.

Cairns Central is a 52,422 square metre regional shopping centre anchored by far north Queensland’s only department store, a 13,519 square metre Myer store. The centre also has a Target discount department store, two supermarkets, seven mini-majors, a 6-screen cinema complex and 170 specialty stores. The trade area population of Cairns Central is approximately 198,000 with a retail spend of A$1.7 billion. The centre is further served by an additional tourism spend estimated at A$800 million annually and also benefits from a CBD location, with the central railway station located in the centre.
