I thought that the train needed to stop at Essen because

says "Reis tussen 2 Belgische stations/stopplaatsen, behalve grenspunten"

But

http://www.grenstreinbus.be/trein/verbinding.php?id=31

so I now think you are right.

It is confusing Flemish, but what the NMBS tries to explain is "you are not allowed to write a borderpoint as destination", eg Visé Frontière, Roosendaal Grens etc. My first time I travelled with the Rail Pass I had understood it incorrect, and had to buy a ticket for Roosendaal Grens - Essen (150 meter max!) of € 10,- at the conductor, as they usually check between Roosendaal and Antwerpen.

Rebuilt Den Haag Centraal station opened
01 Feb 2016

NETHERLANDS: The rebuilt Den Haag Centraal station was officially inaugurated by Mayor Jozias van Aartsen and State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment Sharon Dijksma during a day of celebrations on February 1.

The redesigned terminus is intended to be brighter, more spacious and less cluttered than the 1970s structure it has replaced, and to bring rail, bus and tram transport together.

120 m long, 96 m wide and 22 m high building, which can be entered through glass facades on all four sides and is designed so that trains, trams and buses can all be seen from the concourse at a glance. The glass roof supported on eight steel columns has an area equivalent to two football pitches, and incorporates 218 diamond-shaped elements each measuring 8 m by 12 m

That, and the fact that they needed over a decade to replace the roof under the guise of improving the station for the anticipated increase in the number of passengers, although exactly how these new passengers are supposed to feel less crowded when the only extension is vertical was never explained...

- We're expecting an extra 100.000 people, what shall we do?
- Raise the roof.
- What?

I could go on.

This photo shows both in width and height how small the British loading gauge is compared to most European railways. As you can see, even the freight cars are higher and also seem wider. It makes you wonder: is the class 66 height and width 'small', 'average' or 'big' compared to other British loading gauge vehicles? It would be interesting to see a US gauge train also parked next to it.

And the loading gauge in Western Europe is smaller than the Nordic or ex-Soviet loading gauges, for example, especially in width.

Here you can see the loading gauge width difference between European width M62 and Russian width RVR EMU passenger cars

RIP to the conductor

Although I feel like it's pretty remarkable that a lightweight train hits something like a crane and only one person dies, even after a major derailment. Could have been way worse.

There were only about 15 people on the train. It would have been much worse if it was a train during rush hour.

The crash occured near rush hour, at 9 a.m. and unlike most of the Netherlands there is no school vacation yet in this region. However, the train was traveling outbound from Zwolle during the morning rush, so fortunately there weren't many passengers on board.

It could've been *much* worse if it had involved the inbound train which passed by just moments earlier (there is a short dual track just west of the accident location where the trains pass each other on this mostly single track route).

The train has impacted a tracked elevated work platform, not a typical crane truck. These elevated work platforms have no driver's seat, but are controlled from the platform. They can weigh up to 15 tons, but they travel at only 2-4 km/h.

Here's an aerial photo.

More Stadler Flirts for the Netherlands.

Syntus will buy 16 FLIRT3 EMU's for the Zwolle - Kampen and Zwolle - Enschede lines where they will take over the operations from the NS in December 2017.

So it is confirmed that Zwolle - Kampen will be kept as a railway line?

Yes, it will remain a railway line and it will be elektrified together with Zwolle - Wierden - (Enschede).

The plans to close the line or to turn it into a tramline were rejected by the local and provincial goverments in 2014.

The FLIRT3 were already part of the winning offer by Syntus for this new concession that was awarded to them in June 2015. Now the order for the trains has been finalized.
