From what I understand Nedtrain couldn't make the communication between the EVCs in the driving trailer and the loco work properly. That sounds like a software problem to me. I have no doubt that Nedtrain would have solved that problem when given enough time. Thus it was time constraints, not some unsolvable integration problem that killed the project. Bombardier is the largest train manufacturer in Europe, so I have no doubt their engineers could have found a solution to integrate the equipment, simply because they have more resources.

The train itself is certainly very good. What will make the difference, for better
or for worse, is the way they will be furnished. Quality of the seats ; presence
of equipment like tablets, power sockets, luggage racks, passenger information
systems ; pitch between seats ; alignment with windows ; all of which is to be
determined jointly by NS and Alstom. Wait and see...

All manufacturers are more than happy to customise anything, but you need a large enough order to make that worth while, because it usually requires extra time, construction changes, recertification and results in a non-standard product compared to the product it was based on. The tipping point seems to be in the 30 to 50 units range.

A good example of that is the Stadler FLIRT: Stadler can build and deliver them very fast, but there's little room for customisation because Stadler has built a complete delivery line based on everything being the same.

This is why you see FLIRTs popping up all over Europe.

After about four years of work and a nine-day closure, the works on doubling the busy urban traject Schiphol-Duivendrecht (actually from Riekerpolder connection to Duivendrecht) through the south of Amsterdam has been completed!

I saw the new Sprinter train being tested in Breda. Passengers in the platform looked quite surprised at the train (it made a mock stop minutes ahead of the actual train we were waiting). It looks it accelerates faster than the current rolling stock used on Sprinter service. The interior looks not as spacious as SLT, the seats look much better (don't know how they feel to use). Windows are a tad smaller and of lower finishing quality (they have visible ugly rubber bands around them instead of being concealed in a sleek manner.

Schiphol - Duivendrecht four-tracking completed
Thursday, August 11, 2016

A major capacity enhancement project south of Amsterdam was completed in the early hours of August 10, when Dutch infrastructure manager ProRail reopened the Schiphol Airport - Duivendrecht/Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena line following five years of reconstruction work

The line is one of the busiest in the Netherlands, passing through the financial district of Amsterdam. During the final phase of the project between July 31 and August 10 the line was closed completely with buses replacing train services

Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn station has been opened

To summarize about this railway station: today is the first day of operation of Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn, a station 1.5 kilometers south of Utrecht Centraal and will, besides connecting the south of Utrecht's city center and Rivierenwijk, offer a fast connection to the Uithof for regional train passengers since a tram line is under construction.

It is situated within the heavily modernized string of railway tracks south of Utrecht and four out of eight tracks have a platform (others are for intercity services which do not stop there). In the start, sixteen trains per hour will stop here during peak hours (twelve outside of peak hours).

The railway station itself was heavily delayed as some annoying nimby's complained about noise pollution etc. and didn't want the railway tracks and the station to be opened. It had to be closed for 1.5 years extra because of them, works to connect the railway tracks had to be delayed. Finally trains are able to stop at Vaartsche Rijn.

Here is an article about the opening (which was without fuss btw) in Dutch:

Madil Mayouche was the first today to document the newest locomotive for the Dutch railways. NS E 186 032 arrived in the Netherlands this morning, together with Macquarie Rail 186 144, fresh from its R1 overhaul at the workshops of Dessau. Roem Hemkes caught the machines together at Amersfoort today.

BAM to rebuild Driebergen-Zeist station
24 Aug 2016

NETHERLANDS: Infrastructure manager ProRail has awarded BAM a €90m contract to remodel Driebergen-Zeist station on the Utrecht – Arnhem line. A major element of the project will be the construction of an underpass to replace a level crossing which forms a bottleneck on the N225 road.

The replacement station will have a concourse below the tracks to improve pedestrian access, and will be designed to be energy neutral with solar panels on the platform canopies. The number of tracks will be increased from three to four to help separate inter-city and stopping services, and there will be a new bus station and underground cycle parking
