At the GVB you can buy an unlimited ticket for up to 7 days. So it is still possible.

Most operators still have a sterabonnement type-ticket but it is up to each region and is no longer a national standard. Notably, no longer valid on NS trains in the main cities. Amsterdam also has the issue of bus companies from other regions operating in the area. I thought it would be up to the province to decide on the season ticket availability but it would appear that Arriva doesn't have one but other companies in the same province do. Also most companies have their own day ticket but are usually issued on paper.

Just to correct myself, I just checked the Arriva site and they do accept sterabonnement on their buses in Flevoland, Friesland and Groningen provinces (Noord-Nederland Sterabonnement), but not elsewhere. Do the provinces have to agree to their fare system or is it just up to Arriva? I would have thought a lot of people would have complained about the scrapping of the sterabonnement in Arriva areas as it surely must make bus travel a lot more expensive for some people.

The "service surcharge" has been abolished because you already pay a surcharge for a disposable ticket.

  • A retourticket is only valid on the same day. For the journey back on another day: Sneek doesn't have a ticket counter, but if you insist on paying with cash you can probably already purchase an undated one-way ticket for the return journey at the Schiphol counter
As far as I know, nobody sells undated tickets anymore.

Some machines accept coins, but only up to a certain value (I believe about € 40).

Today the first Traxx locomotive for NS made its Maiden run from the factory in Germany.

Oh NS, haven't you heard? Big logos are in at the moment.

Much better, if I may say so myself.

Just out of interest: Are you Dutch or British?

I'm British and I've only ever lived in England. I am a big fan of the Netherlands though and have been visiting regularly for the last 20 years.

Cool, welcome. I'm partly British (dad) , partly Dutch (mum), lived in England most of my adult live but now living in Tyrol, Austria. Grew up in Holland though.

I think NS should go for one of those special "2.5D" paint jobs that change perception depending on angle of sight

I also wish they developed a new brand for higher speed services and used an orange paint for their loco and cars.

Go and paint them orange in Brazil and stop criticizing fine old Dutch traditions. They have always been yellow.

Is that 186 going to be used for "Fyra" services?

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

There had been green locos as well.

It's bad enough that they bought these green Conexxion buses in. I miss the good old "streekgeel".

Yep, and their diesel counterparts were red. The idea behind that was that an engineer would immediately see "I'm driving a diesel today!" The only reason I can think of is that the person who came up with that color scheme thought that engineers are mindless idiots that only push buttons...

I am too young for that. The only time I can remember seeing a bus like that was from a museum club.

Unfortunately yes.

Fyra livery is one of the best ever IMHO.

They should design a new EMU with the protracted lines of the V250, it was a really good looking train.

Unfortunately, they are.

While I wasn't particularely fond of the Fyra branding (too much purple and pink to my taste) it was very recognizable and very distinctive. Almost everything about Fyra, including the posters, train livery, uniforms and the train managers themselves, was different from regular NS trains. That kind of things gave it a premium touch, which was nice.

With the demise of Fyra, that premium touch has gone out of the window as well. In my opinion there's not much left to be proud of* so in that light it's better to get rid of the livery as well.

* In my opinion, NS should be disenfranchised from the HSL. This whole Traxx crap is absurd, we (being the passengers) should get something better than a half-baked attempt at keeping severely outdated rolling stock running on one of the most modern railway lines in the Netherlands.

I agree with every single point (including the dislike for pink trains ).
