A project of this size surely deserves its own thread on SSC. Note that Boeing is going to set up a MRO facility on 75 acres of land while many IT companies like TCS, Wipro and Satyam have signed MoU's with the government to set up their IT parks at the MIHAN SEZ. Also note that basic construction of roads, boundary wall had commenced in 2006/07 and are probably done by now. I'll shoot a mail and see what we can get.

But here's the big news - The union govt. finally gave its nod to transfer the Nagpur int. airport from the hands of the AAI to MADC (another govt company) which is going to execute the MIHAN (Multimodal International Hub Airport At Nagpur) project along with AAI.

City airport transfer gets govt nod

In a historic decision, the Union cabinet on Thursday gave its approval to transfer of Dr Ambedkar International Airport to a joint venture company to be set up for development of multi-modal international passenger and cargo hub airport at Nagpur (Mihan).

The transfer will pave way for speedy implementation of a dream project conceived over a decade ago but was languishing for want of political support.

This is the first decision of its kind because unlike Mumbai and Delhi airports, which were transferred to private companies involved in air-port development, the Nagpur airport will be transferred to a new entity in which the state and the Central governments will have stakes.

The transfer lease will be for 30 years.

In a move that will encourage economic activity in Vidarbha region, the Cabinet approved the transfer to the JVC comprising Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI)," information and broadcasting minister P R Dasmunsi told reporters in Delhi after the cabinet meeting.

In the joint venture firm, the AAI -- which owns the airport at present -- would hold 49 per cent stake and MADC would have the remaining 51 per cent of equity. The Cabinet also approved AAI subscribing to Rs 4.9-crore capital in the JVC, which would have a total subscribed capital of Rs 10 crore.

"A major obstacle is now cleared. It has now opened a new chapter and put more responsibility on MADC and my team to implement the project," said MADC vice-chairman R C Sinha.

Addressing newspersons in Nagpur on Thursday, Sinha said major credit for getting the airport transfer done finally goes to city MP and Union minister of state for renewable energy Vilas Muttemwar as well as chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who is also chairman of MADC who worked tirelessly to get the matter expedited," added Sinha.

He said it will take at least three months for formation of the JVC and handing over of the airport.

...And after that, MADC has given their MIHAN website a new look.

Even though MADC had finalized its MIHAN airport plan and was waiting for the transfer of the airport, AAI went ahead and started construction on a new terminal to cater to the growing passenger numbers. This upcoming terminal will either be demolished (which I think won't happen) or will be incorporated in the airport plan.

'You will love to miss a flight at Nagpur'

Nagpur, Jan 21 (IANS): Most of the land required for an international hub airport at Nagpur has been acquired and more than two-thirds of the construction work of the accompanying special economic zone (SEZ) has been completed, a top official has said.

The Indian cabinet gave permission on Jan 17 to upgrade the Ambedkar International Airport at Nagpur into a world-class aviation hub for passengers and cargo at a cost of Rs.26 billion ($650 million) with the status of a special economic zone.

"The airport will see world-class development and so beautiful it will be, you would love to miss a flight here," R.C. Sinha, vice-chairman and managing director of Maharashtra Airport Development Co (MADC), told IANS.

Nearly 3,000 of the required 4,311 hectares of land required for the project has already been acquired and more than two-third of the infrastructure work in its SEZ component completed, Sinha said.

MADC is developing the project jointly with Airports Authority of India.

"The delay (in the cabinet decision) has inevitably led to cost escalation but we will raise part of Rs.26 billion committed for the purpose through private partnerships, bonds and securities," Sinha added.

"The MADC expects to receive a proposal to construct an additional 60 x 400-metre runway within a fortnight after which tenders will be floated," he pointed out.

Regarding the SEZ project, Sinha said: "The processing industry alone is expected to see an investment of Rs.350 billion ($8.92 billion). Land measuring 1,500 acres has already been allotted to 27 companies including major IT players and many more requisitions are being processed."

While the first phase of the project will be completed within a year, the entire project will be completed by 2025, 10 years before the originally estimated time, thanks to the phenomenal growth rate of the aviation industry in the country, Sinha said.

A health city comprising 11 super-speciality hospitals, a large IT park and an international school is part of the Rs.110 billion upcoming gigantic project besides myriad other industrial units.

The MADC rendering is for an entirely new airport where currently there is an IAF base. That is the MIHAN airport which they will start building soon.
The airport in the photo is the current airport which the AAI is upgrading.

@OrangeCity_, I see what you mean but I don't see how the 2 renderings that you quoted are of the same MIHAN terminal. The first rendering with the semi circular terminal is the official basic design of MIHAN while the terminal in the second rendering resembles the upgrade that the AAI is given to the present terminal.

I thought there was a new terminal (by AAI) coming up next to the present terminal but that is wrong. my bad. The AAI is infact upgrading the present terminal both horizontally and vertically. That is why you see scaffolding in the images of the terminal with people+ cars around.

This airport needs a large hub and spoke airline to base itself there for it to be successful. Nagpur itself does not offer the potential market required for such a large terminal. The problem is that at this point, there isn't much of a market for a hub and spoke model in India. As the market expands and as the traffic from smaller airports to other airports outside their own respective regions expands, passengers and airlines will find it convenient and efficient to use hub and spoke airlines. At such a time, Nagpur offers the ideal location.

The business model for MIHAN does not depend on revenues from passengers. Hence, it makes sense to develop it primarily as a cargo airport for now (with other B2B revenue streams like the MRO facility thrown in). It would also be an ideal airport if some company wanted to set up FedEx style operations in India (or even the overall region). The passenger terminal can be developed in phases - a small terminal for today's needs, but with the potential for expansion into a major hub airport in the future. MIHAN's plans seem to be on the dot in this respect.

Nagpur has a 3 million population and it has several manufacturing and other companies like Mahindra, Bajaj, IndoRama, Haldirams, GlobalLogic, Persistent etc. There are many IT/Manufacturing companies and specialty hospitals coming up in MIHAN too. Also, many airlines connect Nagpur to the metros and international locations; there are 9-10 flights to Mumbai everyday. So I think Nagpur has a lot of potential and the market already requires a hub airport. It is not going to be a hub just for India but since so many international flights between Europe-SE Asia-Australia fly over Nagpur it will serve as a hub for them too.

Gati Ltd. is going to start FedEx style operations from Nagpur using Air India's cargo planes very soon. They launched their call center in Nagpur two weeks ago.
