Maybe the problem is I use Google Earth, not Google Maps...

Edit: Still, in Google Earth there is "See in Google Maps"

Mike
Yep, it's the place where the Turnpike comes up for air, so to speak, briefly
between the Blue Mountain and Kittatinny tunnels.

Your post was 10.47 PM (CET), and the winning post was two hours later around 1 o'clock in the middle of the night. So it could be possible he wasn't online and sleeping.

The winning post doesn't matter, what matters is 10.47 pm. As for current photo, is it somewhere in central US?

The pattern of roads and fields just to the right of the interchange strongly suggest that we're looking at some place in the U.S. off of the East Coast. A law of 1787 (the Northwest Ordinance) provided that land in areas newly being settled would be surveyed and sold in blocks of a mile on a side - called "sections" (or fractions of such blocks, known as "half sections" and so on), oriented north/south and east/west.

This system ended up being applied to most areas of the U.S. that hadn't been settled yet as of 1787 - and also to parts of western Canada. But in areas where the topography permits (so, not mountains) and where the climate encourages agriculture (so, not deserts), the country roads will usually follow the "section lines" - the boundaries between sections. Flying over, say, Nebraska, you'll see a very obvious grid pattern to the roads.

That said, I've been going over Interstate-to-Interstate junctions in the Midwest in my head (not that I don't have anything else to do...) and haven't come up with the right configuration of highways yet.

It's not an Interstate.

I'd considered that possibility, but I'm not completely familiar with non-Interstate freeways.

Characteristic of you that you are. ;-)
Out of curiosity, have you ever driven (or been) in North America?

Well you are correct in that it is somewhere in the USofA (the 'grid' is a pretty good giveaway on that part, isn't it? )

Carry on!
